I have been depressed for some time now but with a recent breakup it got much, much worse. This is on top of my bpd which is also in full rage now, following the same sad event.

At the moment it is all quite crippling; just making it through the day is rather a challenge and I can't really work much.

My issue is that I can't even have a break from this misery by sleeping, simply because I can't sleep. I try, I really do - go to bed, lights off, etc. and I am really exhausted all the time but I only get a few hours of disturbed, broken sleep or none at all.

I started to think that it does play a part in my hypersensitivity and anger issues. Sleep deprivation just cannot be good for one's nerves.

Now, I guess, the first thing to try would be some sleeping pill but I must confess I'm dreading to try it. I have never used any, mainly because I have frequent nightmares, episodes of sleep paralysis and that terrible entity experience. I actually fear for my life - I think if I'm drugged and unable to wake up from such an episode, I might get killed in my sleep.

It is quite a predicament - I really need to sleep to become functional again (well, I need a hell of a lot more than that) and I have no idea what to do.

Any suggestions, please?

Ask for Ambien!

If you have a low tolerance almost any thing the doc will give u will help. Otherwise, good luck!

I personally don't mind sleep paralysis it's kind of cool. Not sure if u know what happens. Usually when you fall asleep the brain shuts down the body parts so you don't move around. Then when it's done it wakes u up. There was a malfunction

Ask your doc if there is any thing for that. I kinda doubt it but you never know.

Hi Edda, I don't like taking sleeping pills either ... and also know that when I don't get much sleep it makes things that much harder to deal with and can set off the rollercoaster of emotions and thoughts even more. Once you are asleep; do you know what is waking you up? as in, is it nightmares waking you; pain waking you; or you aren't sure?

you could also look at things like what are you doing before you try to sleep - are you relaxing or doing something that is winding your mind up more
sometimes I need to read before I can fall asleep but I know for others that can contribute to insomnia

some other suggestions I've had given to me before are things like not eating several hours before trying to sleep; exercising during the day (although not too close to when you want to sleep); drinking particular teas (you might need to check out your local shops for what is available there) that are supposedly calming but not as strong as a sleeping pill

another thing for right now could be to see if you can try sleeping in the day; just to see if you can break the current pattern although that might upset any kind of schedule (then again, right now you need the sleep more than a schedule perhaps!)

hopefully other members have some other suggestions and between all of it you can get some much needed sleep

Thank you both.

Indievisible, being raped by a growling demon while you are fully awake but you can't shout, can't move is kind of not cool. I know the theory behind sleep paralysis but I also know how inadequate it is to explain the entity experience in its entirety.

Tigergirl, I tend to watch documentaries before bedtime. I don't really eat supper - well, I don't eat much these days at all. Exercise is a bit of an issue, lately. I will definitely try some calming herbal tea.

It varies why I wake up. It is quiet often a nightmare but most of the time I just wake up and can't fall asleep again. Definitely not pain or noises.

definitely sounds not cool to me either

another thing you could look at is if there is any medication you are on that could contribute to the insomnia; recently I went through weeks of insomnia thanks to my migraine meds

i hate sleep paralysis too, it used to make me afraid to fall asleep and take nyquil. I found that melatonin works because its natural and not strong enough to knock you cold, or induce sleep paralysis. still makes sleeping easier though . I buy 10mg and take 2-3. good luck (:
