I'm not sure why, but NyQuil helps me sleep. Not the Z-Quil they put out. Not any other OTC meds that are supposed to help with sleep. Not even Melatonin, warm milk, or chamomile. Just NyQuil. Does anyone have a clue on that one?

I love sleeping, but I'm not sure taking NyQuil every night is a good thing. I'm not sick. I've been taking it on/off for a year.

Just curious...

taking nyquil every night is mot good. there is new zzzQuil coming out in july. its very possible ur metabolism just burns up the zzquil too fast to allow it to work. have you ever tried lavender oils, baths, spray, lavender and chamomile tea?

like the rest of our bodies we heal best sleeping. nyquil helps to do that withits active ingredients. but using every night can turn into an abuse just like cough medicine or any other over the counter.really research non medical ways. itll save u money and allow meds to actually work when u need them instead of gaining a tolerance and it doing nothing.

The combination of alcohol (NyQuil is 25% alcohol = 50 proof), dextromethorphan and an antihistamine ( either doxylamine or diphenhydramine) is big time sleepy time.

Zquil just contains diphenhydramine-Benadryl. I'm a doc, and that's my "professional " opinion.

Yes, it does work well! But taking it also means you're taking acetaminophen every day -and that's not a good thing unless you need it for pain. To get the same effect without the acetaminophen you can take Benadryl 50 mg plus a dose of Delsym ( over-the-counter dextromethorphan), and a shot of your favorite whisky. Not recommending that, but it's safer than the NyQuil with the acetaminophen.

yeah, monkeybrains21, I've tried all that natural stuff. It doesn't work for me. I tried it for months too since my doc says it takes time sometimes.

pam, I was 1/2 wondering if it was the alcohol. I don't drink so this is the most I've ever had. I guess I could do some research, but what is it about alcohol that could cause a person to sleep better?

It's kind of the combo of the antihistamine + alcohol. It slows the body down makes you sleepy. Careful with that though your body will adjust and you'll start to need it regularly. Happened to my mom. + the above posts about safety.
Thanks for this!

Yeah I can vouch for most things said here about using Nyquil to sleep.....HORRIBLE EXPERIENCES!!! Like most sleep meds, the body eventually tolerates, and becomes addicted to it! When I stopped taking it, HOLY CRAP! The withdrawals were HORRIBLE!! Chest pains, sleeplessness, acute anxiety, etc! I vowed never to let that happen again!
Thanks for this!
