Who all does watercolor painting as self-expression, or just because you like it? I used to love watercolor painting but haven't done much at all for 5 years or more.

There are a lot of activities I used to do and really enjoyed them. Watercolor painting was something I loved doing. Wish it would kick in again. Any ideas on how to get back to painting that has worked for you. It is a bit like writer's block perhaps? Haven't worked on my book since July either. Yet, my depression seems better. Painting was something that made me feel good about myself.

What do you paint? Landscape, flowers, realistic painting styles, abstract?

Where did you learn, how much time to you spend painting?

Anything to do with painting, though the only media I've really worked with is watercolor, I'd love to hear from anyone who paints.

Thanks

The Arists Way may work for you. Its a book by Julia Cameron...really good book.

I learned it form a relaly good artist who told me to think and decide what do i want - and i - "thrown into the water" - wasn`t told how exactly to do it - started painting the darker arts, leaving some white space...i used to hate any kind of color especially watercolor - because i felt i didn`t have control on it - and all the beautiful lines i draw with pencil - all the shapes were destroied. Now i paint with watercolor....no problem

I love painting figures- people and animals.

Thank you Lady....

I'll check that book out. I haven't really ever tried people, well, not like portraits. I did do a watercolor of one of our border collies that I really like.

Mostly I've done landscapes. Often ppl think their pencil lines shouldn't show through, but to me that is part of the art! I don't draw well, so I have to put down lines first!

Thanks for your reply.

I have really only painted realistic landscapes. I have a friend who does something with fingerpaints with her eyes closed for self-expression. I forget what she called it. She said it was very good to help her create her feelings.

I'm creative/artistic by nature, sew, create my own knitting patterns, and
trying to write a mystery.

I want to get back into painting and will. Just looking for some inspiration and motavation. I'm in the thinking about it stage right now. My husband just found one of my watercolor palettes down in our storage area in the basement. I found some things in the bag that I had forgotten about, like one of my really good brushes. I wondered where that went!

I have done a few abstracts, but because I haven't had training in that area, I don't feel they are good at all. One of them I like, out of maybe 10 or so. I need to learn all over again how the paint works on the paper.

Thanks for asking. It helps me to know what others are doing out there.

Hi Ladym...

I just looked up The Artists Way on the web. I think I'd like to get that book. Then, try to get a group together or find one.

My friend who did the fingerpainting used to call if Facilitated Drawing or Painting" and she did say it was had an emotional and spiritual connection to it. I'd bet this is what is was all about.

I appreaciate your thoughts.

I'm really wanting to get back into doing graphic art or acrylic.

I have the Artist's Way book too but I figure if read the book I can do the art. Last time I just got a sketch book and started with a decent pencil, eraser and decent paper. I could take it anywhere, like knitting.

I just loved it. One layer of graphite, erase, another layer, erase and pretty soon something would appear on the page. So amazing. I really need to do that more but stepped out into colour and acrylics and haven't been back for quite some time.

All the best to you. I'll post again when I start, maybe.

I started doing the exercises in that book, The Artist's Way, but found it so boring. Now, over a year later, I am starting to do my watercolor painting again.

Just paint! That's what's doing it for me and being so much happier than I was when I first wrote this thread.

Anyone out there do watercolor painting now? or any type of painting?

I know who Terry M is! My sister, who lives in Souther Florida used to watch him all the time. Love his hibiscis painting show! She got the tape and left if for me.

Is he still doing current shows, or are they old re-runs?

Go buy you some paints and paper girl! You only live once.

i have never gotten through THE ARTIST'S WAY. i build plastic models. i find thr research captivating and really enjoy the building part, cutting off thhe pieces, sanding them and putting it all together. very focused and relaxing. also the weathering. most modelers have one aspect they don't like. right noe mine is painting, especially airbrushing. fortunately i know it is an experience thing and i wiull get better as i do more. i can escape from this world for hours when i am building in my work area, listening to music.
Thanks for this!

I mostly paint with acrylics, but I do some with watercolor. Sometimes I paint pretty realistically, especially with watercolor, but I'm also drawn to Impressionism and Post-Impressionism styles. I paint quite a variety of subjects (people, landscapes, animals, architecture, surreal, fantasy, etc.)

I know you mentioned painting, but I'm a digital and marker artist. : D!!! Either way, I love admiring other people's work. But I totally feel for you when it comes to the hiatus that can just drain us of our artistic joys.

Recently I hit an artistic rut that lasted a good year or so. I just verrrry recently picked up my pencil again. And now Im working on not being so hard on myself. (: Im a cartoonist and anime artist so I use a lot of bright colours and I feel nothing captures this better than markers sometimes.

I really hope you find the umph to paint more! I get jealous of painters! I have no idea how you do it. Especially watercolour. The only painting I ever did was acrylic and even that blew my mind. LOL. Painting is such a talent in and of itself. <333
