A friend recommended I try getting a self-esteem self help type book. Has anyone ever used one? Did it help? Can you recommend any titles? What exactly do they tell you to do?

I'm a little skeptical about them because what more can they do besides ask you to list your positive qualities or something, and how is that helpful if you think you have no positive qualities? I'm willing to give it a shot, though, if anyone has advice about what I might seek out.

Take a look at the self-help book here on this site. There is a link to it from the main index listing of all the forums. It's in the box with the description of the self-help forum. And the best thing about it is that we have a forum for discussing your work with the self-help book too, and the author is here and will often participate and help you to get the most out of it.

If I think of any other self-esteem books, I'll post them here too. Some are not specifically about self-esteem, but they do help with self-esteem by addressing a slightly wider area, and that is part of it. There are actually quite a few exercisis that you can do to work on self-esteem. The thing is, you have to do the exercises - not just read the book.

The National Institute of Mental Health (US) "book" is pretty good?
