I have pretty clear and vivid memories, but I think I maybe mix stuff up a little. I was very young, so it seems reasonable that things would look different then they were. That doesn't mean my memories aren't accurate for the most part, but little details are probably a bit off.

People's memories always get distroted when we remember. That's not anything you do wrong or whatever, it's just the process of remembering is reconstructing the past from what we know of it. Traumatic memories generally stay pretty accurate, but I'm not sure if that goes only for repressed memories (you say you have always remembered stuff). But does it really matter whether memories are 100% accurate? For your healing it matters wha tyou remember and how to work on processing that.

My memories have always been fragmented and hard to understand. When I first started remembering trauma they felt hallucinogenic. Now not so much. But if I take them all and try to piece the puzzle together there are still gaps and questions.
It doesn't matter to me anymore. I was able to confirm enough of it to know I have reason to have the problems I have. My main concern is having the best life I can NOW. Most people don't remember accurately--that's why eyewitness testimony is not always totally reliable, and why five different witnesses to a crime will come up with five slightly different stories. The main thing is to get a general picture the jist of which is probably true, then work on managing emotions and correcting cognitive distortions in the now. ![]() |

Memory is not like taking a video of something or recording it, it is tainted with our own feelings, our perceptions, and physical environment. There is so much that goes into memory. Yes you may feel you remember exactly, but if someone else where there they might report details differently, because of their perception. There are things I know for sure and there are things I don't, but in the end, does it really matter, whether memory is completely accurate? Like if you thought it was winter but it was summer because you were inside a house that was very cold due to a/c being turned on. Or some other thing. these items don't really matter, what matters most is your own perception. HTH. Blessings.
