I am not sure if they are doing this anywhere else in the states but this evening in Victoria Texas they are doing a butterfly release for abuse survivors. I am going and will try and get some pics.

This week they said at the memorial this was the start of domestic violence awareness. They did say it was nationwide so there should be something happening throughout the states this week.
When I arrived the first thing I saw was the "t-shirts". These shirts were made by survivors of different ages and sexes. The t-shirts first began in 1975. The representation of the clothesline was that women were often told not too talk about violence within their own home so often they would talk amongst each other while they would hang their clothes out to dry.

I took some pics of some of the shirts but they are pretty intense so I did not post them.

This is a picture of a couple of the women planting a rose bush in the garden in memorial of a local woman who was shot by her ex. Another woman got up and spoke of how her sister 34 and nephew 7 were both killed by a boyfriend.

Cherybery, it's really nice that your town does things like this. I've never seen anything like that here where I live.

Here is a picture of some of the little plants in the garden.
Butterfly Release
The song Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson was sung
Grew up in a small town
And when the snow would fall down
I’d just stare out my window
Dreamin’ of what could be
And if I’d end up happy
I would pray

Trying hard to reach out
But when I tried to speak out
Felt like no one could hear me
Wanted to belong here
But something felt so wrong here
So I prayed I could break away

I’ll spread my wings
And I’ll learn how to fly
I’ll do what it takes
Till I touch the sky
And I’ll make a wish, take a chance, make a change
And break away

Out of the darkness
And into the sun
But I won’t forget all the ones that I love
I’ll take a risk, take a chance, make a change
And break away

Want to feel the warm breeze
Sleep under a palm tree
Feel the rush of the ocean
Get on board a fast train
Travel on a jet plane
Far away and break away

Buildings with a hundred floors
Swinging round revolving doors
Maybe I don’t know where they’ll take me but
Gotta keep movin’ on movin’ on
Fly away break away

I’ll spread my wings
And I’ll learn how to fly
Though it’s not easy
To tell you goodbye
I gotta take a risk, take a chance make a change
And break away

Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won’t forget the place I come from
I gotta take a risk, take a chance make a change
And break away
Breakaway

Lastly, while the some of the women sang the butterflies were released and it happened so fast I could not catch it on film...BUT I found one little baby monarch, which I call the PC butterfly, sitting on one of the little plants.

I live close to Morgantown, WV, where we house West Virginia University and they do lots of activities like this. I've seen the clothesline as well, they are pretty amazing. When I went to college there I didn't take part in any of the activities because my mom was not really considering herself a "survivor" yet and some of my worst nightmares had not happened yet. Wish I would have participated. Butterfly Release

estersvirtue.....I found this but I think if you type in under search "National Crime Victims Rights Week 2006" and then put your city with TX you should be able too find something. I see Houston is doing one not this week but in a few.
