hate this time of year. really hard to get through it as a recovering alcoholic who raised havoc with family when drinking. struggling with horrible anxiety and the feelings that always led me to drink. I've been sober 13 years this month and feel as awful as I did when newly sober. Will go to an AA meeting in a couple hours but am nearly paralyzed with physical symptoms of panic.

Life, this too shall pass.... and it will one minute at a time. Start putting in your mind all the gratitude list of things you have to be thankful for... and the gratitude will help alleviate the anxiety and turmoil. Ignore the holidays and the partys. Look at how much your life is for the better, make phone calls, emails and get your butt to a meeting! Blessings...

Sorry you are struggling. A meeting is a good idea. 13 years sober I doubt family still holds the destruction from over a decade ago against you.
Hang in there. moogs

I am learning in AA that being sober is not the same thing as being in recovery.
This is a tough time of year and I also have to face family members who have bad memories of my previous behaviors. I find it helpful to recite the Serenity Prayer often throughout the day; do; 10th steps; do the 12th step and; accept that I am changing my life and it will take time for my family to believe that my changes are real and reflect who I truly am. I will suggest that this is an important time to connect with your sponsor and share with others at meetings. If we continue to choose not to give in to addictive actions and behaviors, I believe we will find reasons to enjoy the holidays. One day at a time - and sometimes one moment at a time. ![]() ![]()

You can do it! Don't throw the towel. I'm glad you're facing your problems. It is painful and much harder than running away, but it is the real way to go.
Best wishes.

Thank you all for your kind words and encouragement. Still sober, mostly because it is easier to stay sober than to get sober. I know if I pick up just one drink, I can kiss my life and everything I own goodbye. Now that holidays are over, I'm hoping things will get better.
It is difficult to forgive myself.
