I've got the implant and while I don't get periods because of having it, I still get the excruciating pains. Is there any form of pain relief for this? It's come about totally unexpectedly and is really painful to the point where I can hardly do anything!!!

I've had it so bad before where I get a migraine and pass out. I can feel it getting this bad now. Anything better than paracetamol or a hot water bottle?

Please reply asap, it's horrible!

I would contact my doctor. If the meds, hot water bottle, or hot baths aren't working and are that severe, I definitely would contact them. I thought it was just me once not being able to deal w/it but it was not the best solution. I was glad I called to get checked, there was a complication. Best to be safe.

naproxen has recently been put in OTC meds that is specific for period pain. Try that or co-codamol, if it's not helping see your GP.

I see a neurologist for my migraines. He prescibed me Maxsalt which dissoves under the tounge for the headaches that are really bad and make me vomit (to the point that I can't keep any medicine down). It works pretty good for me.

Thanks everyone for your replies!

Fresia: I've had these pains this bad since my periods started and have coped up until now.
Anna342 I will give that a go and Susan888 I will also give that a try.
I am feeling a little better after some sleep and a nice hot shower, I'm just resting today but will try to go for a light jog this afternoon to help with the pain. Let's hope it does help!

I'll be making sure I eat some nice salads and fruit today, especially avocado. I've heard that can help a lot and is very satisfying to eat when you're in pain! Looks like salmon with a lime and avocado salad for me tonight!

Thanks for the tips guys, I still have some slight pain, but hopefully with exercise it'll ease off a bit.

Good morning PainNeverDies,

I'm not sure if you've explored "mindfulness" for pain management, but it has shown itself to be extremely effective. It is an acceptance based procedure, unlike almost all therapies today that try to solve a problem and engage in behavior to affect change, it invites the person to experience the situation w/o struggle or an expectation. Essentially, in mindfulness techniques you learn to attend to your pain as opposed to avoiding it or trying to escape it, thereby significantly decreasing it. I know it does sound counter-intuitive, but it is effective.

Mindfulness has been used successfully with cancer patients, Depression, Anxiety, as a prevention strategy for Depression, to boost immune function, sleep disturbances, fybromyalgia.... the list is endless it seems. It has not been shown, however, to be effective with patients with traumatic brain injury.

The idea started in 1979 by a biologist at the University of Massachusetts named Jon Kabat-Zinn (now very heavily published in this area), who took the Vipassana tradition of Buddhist meditation and pared it down to only the meditative practice. He and others have expanded the practice in the last 30 years and it now has a significant efficacy research base.

For more info, you can read:

Full Catastrophe Living: Using the Wisdom of Your Body and Mind to Face Stress, Pain, and Illness

or visit the University of Massachusetts Center for Mindfulness

and for beginners, the excellent:

Mindfulness in Plain English, Updated and Expanded Edition

And finally, to get a better sense of it, you can simply key in "mindfulness and pain" and up should pop up numerous articles.

Good luck PainNeverDies, I know pain very well and so do understand how it can make your world smaller as all energies are focused on simply managing it w/o falling apart or sinking lower.

With understanding and compassion,
Baaku

Thanks for the tip, Baaku. I'll be sure to give that a read. For now, the pain has settled and I'm happily spending time out walking and shopping etc.

Just curious...you have no idea what is causing the pain....have you ever had tests done to determine what is causing the pain?

I knew a lady I worked with who had suffered from endometriosis & knew what pain she had gone through until they found out & took care of it. You can google "endometriosis" & find out even more information. It's something to think about if you have never been diagnosed for what is causing the pain.

I copied a little out of one article for you to read:

Quote:
What are some of the warning signs which may indicate endometriosis?

First, you have to understand that endometriosis is a very sneaky and elusive disease. It refuses to live by any rules, so it can manifest itself in a variety of ways. Because the location of the lesions have a great deal to do with the symptoms, each woman's symptoms will vary. In general, though, some of the hallmark symptoms of endometriosis include pelvic pain, pain before and/or after menstruation, severe menstrual cramps (the kind that require more than a few aspirin), painful intercourse, painful orgasms, heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding, painful bowel movements (often involving cycles of diarrhea and constipation), infertility, intestinal distress (bloating, vomiting, nausea), lower back pain which may radiate down the legs, bladder pain and/or frequency, and fatigue. However, some women with endometriosis don't have any symptoms and may not know they have endometriosis until a problem, such as infertility, is discovered. Interestingly, the extent of endometriosis has no correlation to the amount of pain a woman will experience.

Damn I just read that and I have a lot of the symptoms! I think a trip to the dr as soon as I get home is in order! Is there like.. An age barrier for Endometriosis? As I am only 18 (19 on Tuesday!!!!!! WOO!)

The pains have subsided a little but not a lot and I HAVE found myself going to the toilet a lot.. And having bloating and the back pain... Hmmm. I'm gonna get to my Dr quick. I hope I'm not infertile either! I'd be gutted!

Let's not jump the gun and assume though, until I know anything from my Dr

But yeah, thank you Eskie, for the info and the idea. It'd never crossed my mind, so you've touched on a good point there. Shows I should listen to my body more often!

I'll read up mor about that and see what I can find out, but I don't wanna get dispondant and instantly panic that it is that. I'm sick of losing sleep! Haha. I'm trying harder to be more positive. Despite the pain, this last week has been incredible

I didn't mean to imply that this is the only possibility but just wanted to point out that there might actually be a real physical reason for your pain that needs to be taken care of rather than just trying to control the pain with your mind & pain medication.

I am not familiar with all the possibilities & don't know that much about endometriosis, only what I heard from the lady I worked with who had suffered from it before I knew her. Your explanation of the pain just reminded me of what she had described. Just to ease your mind, she had a very healthy baby girl & went through the pregnancy with no problems so infertility is not an absolute outcome from it. She had it taken care of before she got pregnant once they determined what was causing her extreme pain & that it wasn't JUST PMS. Infertility I am sure depends on where it's located I am sure, & also how quickly it is taken care of. Of course, I am sure there are other possibilities that I haven't heard of or know about. That's why it's important to go to the Dr/Obgyn when we have extreme pain instead of just trying to control the pain ourselves. Yes, we do need to listen to our bodies. I know it's hard because we always fear that Dr's will think we are just overreacting to the pain. Even if there is nothing, its better to eliminate the possibility & free our minds.....or know there really is a problem & have it taken care of so that it doesn't cause worse problems as the years pass.

Just a few links you might like to read even though I am sure you can google yourself:
Mayo-clinic has very indepth information (along the left side are many selections you can chose to find more (symptoms, causes, risk factors, complications, preparing for an appointment, tests & dx, treatments & drugs, etc):
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/endometriosis/DS00289
What it is:
http://www.endometriosisassn.org/endo.html
Related with the environment & toxins:
http://www.endometriosisassn.org/environment.html

Definitely don't worry about it until you know exactly what is causing your pain, but it's important to be educated & either have the pain dx'ed or have dx's eliminated to ease your any worry. Usually when there is extreme pain, there is a reason & a Dr needs to be addressed. It may be necessary to use pain relief techniques after you find out what is causing the pain, but knowing the cause is the first step coping with the pain.

Best wishes,
Debbie

Thank you for this, Debbie. I will check out those links later. For now the pain is causing me to feel very sick I tried sleeping it off and it worked a teensy bit but has come back even worse. Ughhhh. Going to try to eat something, not sure if it'll stay down but hope it will!

I'm not worried. I'll just give my Dr a call in the morning and try to get an appointment, see what this is all about and such.
Thanks for this!

TPND, as far as I know there isn't an age limit for endometriosis ... a girl I know (she's 18?) was just diagnosed with it after suffering for months without knowing what it was.

Another woman (I think I know more women than that, but just for simplicity's sake) had reallllllly bad ovarian cysts that wouldn't go away naturally, so she was put on birth control and they went away that way.

Me? I'm likely one of those who has PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder) because I go... well, I go crazy. In so many ways. I was on a birth control pill (progesterone only, not an estrogen & progesterone pill) but it kinda made me more crazy. SO I stopped that and now I take prescription strength Naproxen (it's a muscle relaxant) but you can find it without a prescription at your drug store, it's just a lower dosage. Take lots and lots of Midol. It can work, but I always also take it with more Naproxen.

It was my Birthday today and while it was a wickedly awesome day despite not having family or a boyfriend around, my friends all gathered up and celebrated with me as a surprise

It nearly ended badly when I stood up from the sofa, screamed and crashed to the ground. My stomach. it seriously felt like I had been stabbed in the stomach straight through to my spine. The pain was excruciating and while I NEVER cry from pain, it was so bad, I was reduced to tears. I was curled in a ball on the floor, clutching my stomach crying my eyes out. My stomach felt like it had ripped and it spread through to my back and was awful.

It stayed like this for a good hour or so and I eventually could straighten out my legs and lay on my back. Then another hour later, I could stand up, but with pain. Half hour longer and i could stand up and walk with very little pain so since then I have been walking very slowly and sitting on my sofa. I took 2 nurofen to ease the pain. I am seeing my dr tomorrow. I saw her today and she said if my stomach pains got worse, I HAVE to go see her. So after tonight, I need to go and see her. And I will make sure that I do.

I'm still not 100% but I'm taking it easy for once. Art therapy was very emotional and difficult today. First session. But I got through it and am going again next week

Glad you are getting help from your Dr.....important to find out exactly WHAT is causing that pain as it definitely isn't a normal pain.

Good luck in getting the problem Dx'ed

I too am glad you are getting help from your dr.

I so feel for you. I have significant endometriosis that is symptomatic with severe symptoms like you are describing, not to say that is what you are experiencing however. I was diagnosed at 15. There is no age restriction on endo, only that you be a menstrating female and even can continue after menopause. However, if it is endometriosis, there are good treatment options available now, not to worry.

Thank you for the Birthday wishes, Eskie

I will definitely ask my dr about it next week when I see her again. I might even talk to my carecoordinator about it also and see what she thinks.

The pains are still there this morning and I got so fed up that I overdosed on sleeping tablets hoping that it would either kill me or just put me into a very deep sleep. It did the latter and I feel so much better now after a good sleep

Hoping today's gonna be a better day. Thanks everyone for being here. My Birthday was a very hard day and had my heart aching a few times.

UTIs left untreated can advance to the kidneys and cause back pains along with other symptoms some of you have shared.

hope you all find out what...and a solution too!

Just wondering how you are doing, if the pain has lessened & curious if your Dr found anything that was causing your pain?

Thanks for your replies everyone. I have been going to the gym each day to keep my exercise up and make me feel better emotionally as well as physically. I am still getting the pains every now and then and have asked my dr. I can't remember what she said it could be, but she gave me something for it and it hasn't worked so I'm going back again next week to see what else she thinks it could be.

Sorry I haven't been around much, I've had a lot to do and been at the gym and trying to get my mental health sorted. It's been failing miserably.

I hope everyone here's ok, thank you for caring.
