I'm not afraid of guns, as I grew up with them. I wonder just how many of us do keep a gun handy at home or even conceal-carry?

No way!! Even if guns were legal here I would certainly not carry one on me or have one in my home.

A tazer - maybe, but even that is not needed in my society.

Part of me wants to have a concealed weapon/just a gun anywhere because it might help me feel safe and able to defend myself... but at the same time, I don't trust myself with a gun because of my history with sui thoughts

No, but I have a seriously lethal intent if anyone ever attacks me. No such guns for ordinary people here in Canada, though.

Because of my mental health, my sister took my gun and hid it. Thought I would do myself in. Never thought of it to do that with. I believe in using a gun if necessary. I also believe that you shouldn't get a gun or be licensed unless you've been trained in it's use.

My father had guns and I was always taught, guns are not toys. If you buy one for protection, you don't threaten someone with it, nor do you aim to maim. You shoot to kill. And if you are not ready to do that, then, I think another form of defense is for you.

Unfortunately, even though I voluntarily committed myself a couple times to a psych hospital. Any committal, voluntarily or not, you can not usually get a permit to carry. (At least in the last 2 states I've lived).

Yes, I have conceal carried since the mid 1990's. Plus another gun to keep at home for my son to use for self defense when I am away from home.

My pdoc also conceal carries.

I agree 100%. You should be trained in gun safety and demonstrate precision in target practice in order to own a gun. Owning a gun is a serious responsibility that requires good judgement and experience.

Have you got a permit in spite of being psych hospitalized? Curious and don't know you're history?

I also believe that most crimes are not carried out by law-abiding citizens who follow the laws about firearms. It's the ones that have them illegally we have to worry more about.

Point well taken. Me and my sons go once a month to practice targets, quick-draw, etc. Actually it is an enjoyable time. We do however. live in a state in the USA where wild west rules prevail, and drug crime is rampant.

Yes. My mental illness is stable. I am not a danger to myself or anyone else.

I bought a smaller gun last year for conceal carry and the gun dealer called to check the database. When I initially got the cc permit the state police did a background check on me. The state police and the prosecuting attorney said I was justified to use my gun to protect myself when I shot my assailant years ago.

Wow! You had to shoot an assailant? If you don't want to tell your story on this forum, do you mind PM'ing me? Sounds like you live in Texas! LOL! I do love to target practice. Very enjoyable.

I can't wait for my next piece: a long-barrel .22 revolver like my dad had for squirrel shooting, he got it from his granddad and mother sold it!

Many of the people at my church (& they are my neighbors on the neighboring farms) have gone for their CC. They are all encouraging me to get trained & learn how to shoot because I live alone in the country.

I am not into doing hunting myself & my farm is a protected area for my deer & critters with no hunting allowed.....but I do believe in being able to protect myself.

I was under the understanding in California where I previously lived that if you were involuntarily committed to the mental hospital that you were not limited for the rest of your life to not being able to purchase a gun, thought it was only for 5 years after......considering it's been way over 10 years now, I don't think there would be any problem.

I believe in being trained & not just getting a gun for the fun of it.....I believe that it's only to be used for me in an emergency when my life would be threatened ....& that's the only time I would use it. I think having a concealed weapon is a good idea personally. I have heard so many good reports of someone who is carring who has been able to stop a criminal because they were there & had a gun at the right time.

Tbh, I don't trust myself enough to ever own a gun.

My bf has many different guns ~ and we have gone to shoot targets, old fruits & veggies in a safe area. My bf is *very* safety conscious. Which is wonderful, because that's a necessity imo.

I feel that encouraging to conceal carry is "normalising" gun violence. It scares the crap out of me that America has so much influence over the rest of the world. A lot of the illegal guns here come from America. I have never ever felt the need to use deadly force against anyone I have ever met, even those trying to hurt me. There is no reason for using a deadly weapon against anyone. Surely they can come up with a "weapon" that isnt deadly for those who live in violent cultures. The more we see these things in the media the more "normal" they become, and shooting each other is NOT normal human behaviour.

killing each other seems to be normal behavior to some / I am totally cool with guns in the home. Those who have them IMO should be very conscientious, know each gun they own inside and out, and know how to use them correctly. I do not believe in shoot first, ask questions later. I don't like shooting them, but I know how to. If I were in a situation where my life depended on it, I would probably not shoot to kill unless there were literally no other option. I am a firm believer, and I think there are facts people ignore to back me up, that guns don't kill people; people kill people. Just about anything can be a deadly weapon and misused. I would not consider a hammer to be a weapon, although there are plenty of cases where one has been used in murder. I don't have a CC because knowing myself, I'd stub my toe and the darn thing would go off. That's just my luck

I am not one to base my opinion on an isolated case but there was a story yesterday about two guys that got into it in a movie theatre and one ended up shooting the other one for texting, killing him. The shooter was a retired cop, obviously trained to use guns. This is the kind of stuff that freaks me out.

One alternative is pepper spray but if you are in a situation tell the assailant before they get close that you have it because they'll most likely run. They know you aren't afraid to use it and you really don't need to be trained.

We don't have guns in my country, but I'd never hide a knife or anything; I'd probably just run.

Curious to two responses about defending without using deadly force if someone, say, breaks into your home...what if they have a gun? How would you defend yourself?

Sorry if I make anyone feel defensive as that's not my intentions. I guess I'm just curious.

Or, someone comes up to you to rape you maybe after carjacking your car or when you are walking someplace you really wish you weren't but given the circumstances ended up being in a dangerous place?

I don't know about anyone else....but if it's between me or them getting the worst end of the situation....I would rather it be them. I would rather NOT depend on anyone else to take care of me in critical situations where TIME DOES COUNT. No one cares about me like I do.

I don't have a gun yet just because I haven't gotten around to the training first.....after my experience with a bow & arrow when I was in Junior High....shot it at the target & it flew over the house.....my aim isn't that good at least NOT with a bow & arrow.....but when it comes to life or death....I'm sure my aim would be a whole lot more right on.

People that break into homes typically fall into two categories. The larger is robbery. The other is rape. Robbers don't want conflict. They want to get the goods and leave. They look for times when you are not home. So when they are confronted they typically run. I would avoid confrontation if I could. No material goods are worth it. Somebody did case my building last year. They broke into my neighbors place. Why? Because she hadn't taken precautions with her window which is floor level, old and obscured. Nobody else has obscured windows or they are home bound/work at home. She has the least valuable stuff too. Rape is much rarer in the place I live. One reason I live here. I also am not stupid about locks and alarms. I take precautions. The risk of rape or a violent robber is too low to justify having a gun around.

In college I lived in a seedy section. Crack house across the street. A federal task force a few buildings down. I took extra precautions there like crossing the street if I was at all uncomfortable or taking a cab at night if necessary. Although I didn't know as much about the neighborhood as I should have I chose a less vulnerable apartment. I was in a situation where my instinct flag went into red zone. I was alert enough to not get too close. Sure, I was lucky too. All things being equal I still wouldn't pack a gun.

EDIT: we know they cased the place because somebody saw strangers hanging around. At least now they know to take a picture if they don't feel comfortable asking them to leave. That would have let them know people are aware.
