Cramps. Yuck.

Have you got a heating pad? If you don't, try getting something warm (like microwaving a towel) and put it on your lower abdomen. That can help. Or sitting in a warm bath. Have you got any Tylenol, Advil or Motrin ... anything that's a pain reliever drug?

If you can, try sitting or lying down in a comfortable position.

If you can take more naps... that helps too... can't feel cramps if you're not awake!

My sincere sympathies... cramps suck SO bad. If you're prone to bad cramps though... perhaps talking to your doctor would be a good thing.

Walking around and light exercise, stretching, and massaging the area might help. Kind of treat it like you would a leg or other cramp. Soothing warm drinks and "comfort" foods might make you feel a bit better too.

Something that completely worked for me is this: take 400-500 mg of Magnesium, and 100 mg of vitamin B6 once a day, every day, the week before your period. When your period comes, no cramps. To be honest, I was a lazy bum, and only took it the first day of my period, when the cramps are at their worst. The first time I did it, it took the edge off the pain. On each subsequent time, the pain was reduced a bit more, until now, whenever I start to feel the cramps coming, I take the mag and B6, and they go away immediately. Hope this works for you too.

I used to get cramps so bad when I was a teenager that I'd throw up or have to stay home from school. One time in college I was sitting in class with cramps so bad I started to sweat and couldn't wait for class to end. I barely made it out before throwing up. UGH..

That being said, doctor prescribed Motrin for me..it was fairly new on the market back then. (late 70's, early 80's) It was a miracle. Before that, I took Pamprin which worked until I started getting more severe ones.

I agree with Christina86 that a heating pad, hot water bottle, or a warm bath will help for mild to moderate cramps.

Avoid anything like caffeine while you've got them cause that could make you more jittery and cramps worse (it does with me).

See doctor first if haven't already, to rule out anything other than routine monthly cramps.

There's all kinds of over the counter stuff out there that may work for you too. Also, some mild exercise can help too. (Don't want to sound like a preachy fitness expert, but I find it gives some relief)

I forgot to say that since I've been on birth control pills since 1993 or so, I have NO cramps!!! I was once on Depo Provera for 3 years, and during that time I not only had no cramps but NO PERIODS! Cramps.

Unfortunately, I gained 10-15 lbs on it, so I went back to the pill. It also helps with other PMS symptons, like mood changes, bloating, etc.

Any cramps I get now are mild and will respond to Advil, Tylenlol, or a heating pad!

You know what really helped me when I had periods? whenever I started getting that heavy cramp feeling (I used to get em sooo bad), I used to drink milk. It really helped ease the pain, it was a godsend find to me!

I dont know if it was all in my mind, or if there is actually something in milk that soothes the pain, but from then on I have always had cravings for milk everytime I was on! (and even now I get it once a month even tho I havent had a preiosd in 16 month haha!)
