I currently use the Mirena IUD. It's wonderful. The cramping is minimal, which is the number one reason why I use BC because I have severe abnormal pain. I only bleed when I am under tremendous stress. But the tough part is that I need to be knocked out to do it because I'm too scared to be awake, and I am also very tight, so I have to be given a pill that opens the uterus which causes labor-like contractions. I fainted twice taking those pills.
I am not sure if I want to use the IUD again, or at least to go through the process. I want to know what's out there before my appointment with my OBGYN. |

I had the mirena for five years. My main issue is that I have high blood pressure and smoke, so I can't take an estrogen based BC. When it was time to take out the Lorena, I couldn't afford another one and my insurance doesn't cover it. My doctor put me on Jolivette (another name is Nora-B I think). It's a progesterone only pill. But also it's 28 day hormone, no sugar pill. I have irregular cycles and when I have one they are severe bleeding and cramps so bad I can't move. Even if I have one monthly with BC, the cramps are horrible, so I need 28 day hormone. With the Jolivette, the most I get is spotting every so often. I do get some cramps, bit nowhere near what I used to before BC.

I use abstinence.. which actually has a fairly high Pearl-index, if you would believe it. Planning to abstain and actually abstaining aren't the same.

That works for "birth control" but doesn't help with abnormal bleeding or cramping. My understanding is OP uses it for that mostly or at least in addition.
