Are you still having your monthly cycle? - if Yes, are you about to start...... this may be the problem.

I still get crazy emotional on birth control, but no where near as bad as I was. If it continues to be bad, let your doc know and maybe they can try a different one. Most women have to sample a few kinds until they find what works.

Oral and injectable birth control is made up of natural and synthetic hormones, which do in fact, alter your balances. That's how it keeps you from getting pregnant. So yes, it can certainly alter your moods.

Yeah I think it can... in one of my first bad depression episodes a few years back, the doc thought it was related to the pill, since I'd only gone on it six months previously, so changed the type. The depression did go away, so it was a possible cause, however it's been back recently with a vengeance... But ancedotally, yes it does affect your moods.

What generation pill is it?

I went psycho on one. Loette. YUCK.

I thought it was me but friends also had issues on it. It was right after there were scares about 3rd generation contraceptives and blood clots. So drs here were putting girls on 2nd generations as a precaution, but they seem to have worse side effects.

Most of us just went back on 3rd generations, as long as we didn't have any real risk factors.

I now take one called Yasmin - it apparently has the closest possible to progesterone (i think that's the one) and it makes absolutely no difference to my mood, skin, or weight Birth Control

Good luck with your situation.

I take Aviane, generic for Yaz. (Actually this thread reminded me to take it today so thanks!)

I haven't noticed weight gain and my skin is most definitely clearing up. I would have breakouts from h*ll before my period before. I'm still a tad emotional but nothing like the intense depression I was feeling before I started taking it. The week or two before, I would have no energy, and the breast tenderness actually made me think I was pregnant. And I was nauseous.

Luckily, it seems the Aviane is working great and I won't have to experiment. Its a low dose deal...so we still use condoms cuz I don't quite trust it for controlling birth but maybe thats my paranoia lol. It sure has helped a TON with the PMS though.

I've had problems with some birth control and really bad mood swings. Norplant was the worst. I had it taken out early, because it made me feel so bad.

I'm on seasonale now (the one where you only get your period every 3 months). I really like it and its worked well. I really like the only every 3 month thing too. I'll miss that. I'm going off it soon because we are going to try for a baby.

Thanks, the posts were helpful. I'm on Ortho Novum. not sure what generation it is or whatever. And yes I'm still having my cycle; acutally the doc said it was a good idea where I've been incredibly irregular as far as my monthly cycle goes; like going without on for months and months.

I can't take birth control pills as they wreak havoc with my moods. One I tried made me totally manic at times and totally depressed at other times. Another couple I tried made me really, really depressed all the time. It's just not worth it. Hormones are powerful chemicals. I use the diaphragm now as my system can't take the hormones.

I was on accutane when it was still in early clinical trials, before birth control was required, I think I was 10. Basically, it was proven to cause suicidal thoughts or depression.

Sometime between 12-14, I was put on another round of accutane, and birth control was required, even though I had never even kissed a boy, I had to take it.

Now, I'm 22, and I've attempted, or thought of attempting suicide numerous times.

So, I honestly don't know if it could have been the birth control all this time or whether its my own body. Or if the birth control has drastically enhanced these thoughts.

Recently, it has been causing other side effects...or at least I think that has been the cause. I get horrible headaches that seem to originate from all over the inside of my brain, kind of like muscle spasms.

I have little to no sex drive, and as a kid I used to have a huge sex drive...not that I knew what a sex drive was, or that anything came of it.

I'm usually very sympathetic and empathetic, but lately, I see everything in and objective(?) way. I have moments where my perspective completely shifts and I see loved ones as strangers I could care less about, but I want to care and I can't.

I think I've been on Desogen (birth control) for 2 or 3 years.

I'm not sure how much of this is me, and how much of it is the medication...I've been on birth control since the beginning of puberty...and I think I want to stop taking it.

I've discussed it with my boyfriend, and he said we don't have to have sex, as long as I feel better. The thing is, I don't know if I'd be fine with that.

I don't know. Does anyone have any advice?
