Isn't it amazing the number of "bad" and/or inexperienced people that are responsible for hiring new employees? Even better, I won't get the job because I'm a threat to the hiring manager or department head! The above scenarios have unfortunately become the fixture to what the job-market has become and it's progressively getting worse. Yes, who wants to hire the person with over 15+ years of experience at 150,000, whereas, the 25 year old candidate can get the job done for 60,000. Well, I've taken a mental beating for the past five years while trying to find a fulltime job and I'm at a point where I'm at a loss for words and help! It's funny how monster.com and careerbuilder.com publish articles from authors who've never been unemployment, yet, they appear to know what it's like to be without a job..let alone they've never the mental affects of being without full-time employment. Can any of you relate?

You're singing my song. I'm 43, a designated accountant with an MBA. I've been unemployed for over 2 years. And once you start to have a gap like that on your resume, it's not just age, but people start to wonder what was wrong with you, that you couldn't get hired.
I just started back to school to retrain in forensic accounting, in the hopes that that will let me reenter the job market. splitimage |

I am 56, an attorney with mental health issues. I have been out of work for 4 years (let go because of depression). This was my dream job. I have no current references.
I can relate. |

If you got welfare/social service in your area, fake an illness and get put on it..
It seems to be what everyone is doing. |

I know the feeling! Looking for work at the moment, to say the least it has been an interesting journey at my age.

Wait, why would someone hire you when they can hire someone to do a similarily adequate job for half the price? Are you seriously asking for twice what someone with only a few years experience would take? Obviously you won't get hired for that reason and the entitlement? Gross. That was a joke right?
If your a threat to the department head, why aren't you applying for his job? If you're so ridiculously overqualified, why would they hire you when they can hire someone who is going to be happy meeting expectations? If you really want a job that is "beneath you", as your attitude seems to suggest, leave things out of your resume, take the pay cut, and don't talk like you want to advance. Oh and those career websites? Simply common sense writing. |
