I'm a receptionist now and miss some of the more challenging jobs that I've had but haven't had any luck in finding anything else right now, so I'm just glad to have a job. The only thing is I'm working as a temp for two years with no benefits.

I worked in construction for 36 years as a: Hey! YOU!! Yeah, YOU!! That's right, the dumbass looking guy! (that was my starting job), then I moved on to being a carpenter, carpenter foreman, general foreman, field engineer, project engineer, project superintendent, project manager and estimator... I pretty much learned as much as I could and advanced as far as I could go, short of becoming a prinicple company owner. I was fortunate enough to be able to afford to retire in 2008.

10 years database engineering. I prefer contract so my jobs change every year or so. I'm totally sick of it. I've been taking a lot of time off the last couple years. Now I am working to transition to web and seo (web analytics). That pays the bills. My other career would be artist.

I feel you. My psychiatrist has suggested I take short term disability from work due to the stress. My boss is a monster who enjoys making others miserable. Hang in there!!

Update: I've closed my law practice and am now basically unemployed. Have a possible opportunity at a big company to do in-house work as a collections attorney - - will know more after the 1st of the year. Could be just what the doctor ordered!

I recently got a job as an usher at a movie theater. It's actually exhausting. I hate cleaning the bathrooms and theaters. It's my first job and I often have anxiety about being fired- not that it would be a terrible thing considering I'm already having a hard time juggling school, extra-curriculars and therapy.

I have been unemployed since Nov 13; could no longer function at work due to depression. Previously I have been a cafe manager (9 months), internal auditor (1 year), business analyst (1 year) and external auditor (4 years).

Ground stewardess, then barista. Then I left it to be a ground stewardess again (I ended up loving it), then I lost my job and now I just started a creative internship. The pay is horrible and I'll call the work environment "challenging" but I'm grateful I have something to do again and it's always been my dream so I'll better bear it for now.

I am a computer programmer, and started an analytics business. My work focuses on adapting artificial neural nets to address unstructured data challenges. I swear it's more interesting than it sounds, hahaha.

I'm sorry to hear that. I remember when I was in college, I was chatting with my favorite math professors in his office about a special topics course he had offered several semesters prior. It was a special-topics course for particularly high-achieving students, and taught in the style of a seminar. Since he had more freedom with this course, he centered it on a topic of deep interest to him (information theory), and had the hope that he could foster in his students the same passion that he feels towards the material.

And yet, he couldn't believe both the level of apathy from the students and the sheer amount of laziness they demonstrated. Too many students treat their studies as a means to an end, and care only about the material that will be on the examinations. I once overheard some students criticizing a wonderful lab instructor (a grad student) for having the gall to "think he's a professor." He was a nice guy that was genuinely invested in his students beyond what would be expected from a graduate assistant, and yet some students had the gall to twist this around as some kind of flaw.

For what it's worth, I think teaching is among the most noble professions. Some of my absolute favorite instructors were those most often disparaged by other students for expecting a lot of their students. But I benefited immensely by instructors like that, and will always be appreciative of everything they've given me. As much as the vast majority of students don't give your efforts the consideration you deserve, there will always be a small few who will always be thankful.

Been unemployed for nearly 3 years.

Prior to this I worked as a Support Worker/KeyWorker for a housing scheme which catered for men aged 22-35 years old who all suffered from Autism, Learning Disabilities and Challenging Behaviour.

Hoping to get back into it in 2014 :-)
