I created a group for the unemployed ONLY, esp. "long term".

Not trying to get anyone to "defect" this group, but the unemployed are in a class by themselves.

Seems the forum for the Recession is not busy anymore. Yet, the Recession is not over for everyone.

I do not work, either. I think I would enjoy volunteering in a nursing home.

Hi - I found your group. I have a very part-time situation of some contract work I get paid for, but I'm so extremely underemployed I consider it unemployed. It's a little gig I got from a family member who is a consultant to the organization that I do work for. If I don't qualify for your group, just let me know. I'm 50+.

Thanks for your post. Just click "Join Group" and it will prompt me that you're joining.

I agree-long term underemployed is like being long term unemployed.

I just put in a request to join your group. It's been almost three years since I've worked.

Hi,

I hurt my back in 2011 and then my company canned me (I hated the job and couldn't continue physically or mentally anyway). I thought it would finally give me the motivation to find a more fitting career, but I'm having the darndest time figuring things out and getting my confidence back. The longer it continues, the harder it gets to get off the island.

Wilson!?!?!

Thanks for the update. You're a member now.

BTW, I like your Clint Eastwood picture in your profile. Love that actor, esp. his old Westerns.

I agree--the longer it continues, the harder it is to get "rescued." The long term unemployed don't have any advocates or a "voice" like even the homeless do. Not that they don't deserve it, but hello??? That's definitely a factor in contributing the homeless: Companies not hiring out of work people.

What the heck? Do they think they will just fall into some deep abyss and disappear?

This may be moot, but aren't employers "supposed" to not fire people injured on the job? Or, if it wasn't on the job, I don't know.....Of course, they don't always do the right thing as we all know.

Folks, if you want to join the group, you can either:

a) Post in this thread
b) Leave me a visitor message
c) Leave me a private message

Whichever is most comfortable.

Employers can't overtly fire you, of course, because of your injury. But they can fire you by claiming your absence has become a detriment to the business. They just have to make a "reasonable" effort to accommodate you and hold your job until a doctor (yours or theirs) determines you can return to work. Of course, many who get injured can no longer perform their old job at an acceptable level to the employer and face retribution and eventual termination. In my case, their doctor claimed I could return to work 100% while my doctor still had me on a 25lb lifting restriction. I could go back to work and risk worse injury or listen to my doctor and lose my job. I really only had one choice.

Yeah, Clint has always been one of my favorites.

I want to join the group. While I've been unemployment for four months, before that I was underemployed working retail and providing care to others. Definitely not a use of my college education.

Does it matter that I'm looking for work after being on temporary disability for a year? I feel like I haven't worked in a lifetime. Also I had a year temp disability before getting the last employment.

No, it doesn't matter. Out of work is out of work---It's bad enough the way the public and employers want to define this LARGE group of people and making them fit in certain criteria.
