My story...after 11 years with a job, I was offered a new role and took it. 32 days into new job, they call me in to tell me its not working out. I'm still in shock. I was working hard, just getting into new routine. I always felt like I didn't fit in, but I thought time would take care of that. I am 44, mom of 2 young boys, the main bread winner. I'm so depressed today. I'm embarrassed, deflated. Don't know what to do next so I came here. I have no one to turn to.

I'm so sorry to hear you lost your job. I've lost a couple of jobs that just knocked me on my bum. It's a hard thing. Can you share more about what happened?

Oh no! I am so sorry! Boy have I been there. I know how rough that is and how demoralizing it can be. Sometimes things happen for a really good reason though! Think of this as an opportunity to go elsewhere, change up the people or location of your job. Change can be good.

First off, I'm glad you're here. This is a safe and supportive place to discuss the incredibly hard business of making a living while keeping some aspects of yourself intact.

And occasionally stumbling or getting a raw deal or just opting out. We've celebrated success for some, losses for others.

I'm sorry that this happened yesterday and I'm sure that the pressure of being the breadwinner makes it even harder -- it's not like you were working for the great fun of it (who is?)

How are you feeling with 24 hours behind you? Are you leveling off, or feeling worse or...better?

Aw thanks for all your comments. Day 2 doesn't sting as much. Although its hard to get a good nights sleep. Everything gets so clear at night and the clarity is terrifying.

The plan right now.... I am going to try and get my old job back. I left there on good terms but they may have already filled my role. If that's the case, I'm in big trouble! It took all summer, 5 interviews to get new job so I know job hunting is a long process, not something that comes easily.

I'm still in shock. I cant believe I was duped by this new company. 40days is not long enough to get my seat warm. They didn't even give me a chance. But they are a start-up and you take a big chance going from a big company to a startup. I thought I could make a valuable contribution. But I guess they didn't have the time (or money) to support me. They realized they made a mistake, they let me go. Now I have to pay for their mistake.

Be warned. If you're job interviewing, ask as many questions of them as they do of you.

I'm sorry. Do you have an employment office near you? Work on your resume and see. I hope you can get your old job back, though.

Pack it in, don't beat your self up with that....What ever the circumstances you sought a new job got it then got let go after 32 days. Yes, if you could get your old job back then do so. I wouldn't feel guilty about something new after 11 years.

I'm so sorry to read of your loss, momsdown11. Something similar happened to me years ago. I recovered... eventually. But it took time. And, in some ways, it still hurts. I'm glad you came here to PC. Go ahead & hurt for a short time. Then get back out there & start looking for another job. It's important not to dwell on this for too long. Thirty-two days in a new position & all of a sudden you're fired? This is not your fault, although you & your family will bear the brunt of it. I send warm thoughts your way...

32 days? So sorry. Maybe they had a agenda and set you up. I wish you well.

I've been in that situation a few times. It always seems to be the hardest of workers in some companies that get picked on. It's not you so much as the employer. I know so many people who have had horrible employers that would look for the smallest fault to get them fired. But it's really not you. They way I looked at being fired was a chance to move on to greener pastures. I think I even went back to my old work and thanked them for firing me. Ooooo, the look they gave me. Eh, just shows how miserable they are stuck stocking junk at a cheap dollar store. I then called Health and Safety Inspectors to alert them of the hazardous conditions they kept their store in. Karma.
Hang in there. Everything will be okay.

I once read that losing one's job is the "psychological equivalent to getting hit by a car!" I agree, disturbing as that analogy is.

And our culture doesn't help. People are expected to just "suck it up", and employers should be doing more to solve the problem they helped create: Unemployed people.

IMO, 30 days is not nearly enough to get settled into something new, for that learning curve. Some people just have no humanity or patience or whatnot!

So sorry this happened to you. Our "worker bee" culture is incredibly hard on self-esteem. I heard of a saying: "Europeans work to live; Americans lives to work." Sad, sad, sad.
