Personally at work the best way for me is to learn is to make a checklist of each step I have take for example...Click Here, Go to this page, Press save etc. and why.
At work they were proud of me when I first started and I made these step by step instructions cause we literally just about have no job aids and the ones we do are horrible. Now I find myself asking repeated or the same questions over and they are frustrated with me. When I say I want to make a checklist they just say it over again and I cant write that fast nor process why the task works the way it does. so I need more time to take notes with step by step instructions. Im sure they just think Im lazy and stupid. I admit some things I can look up and use resources online but I am used to relying or their brain to much which is my fault. But a large part of the job is knowing these things/processes that are not at all documented; therefore you have to learn from others. Ive been at my job for few years and I know theres stuff I don't get that I really should understand by now. What I don't understand is why I don't get things like they do and process so quickly. You can explain something to me a million times but I wont get it and suddenly someone will say something in such a way it clicks in my mind; and once Ive got it I'm good. People cant deal with someone like that at work and I seem lazy, stupid and hardly can be on time. I sent an email today asking a few team members how to do something and they responded. Of course I was totally wrong and embarrassed. Then I asked this guy that has been there a year less than me and a process was explained to him once today and he seemed to get it. So I sent him my job aid I started and asked if he could help me and let me know what I was missing as far as steps and asked some reasons why things were done a certain way. He said he was looking at my notes when I asked him about it and he was typing up stuff to respond. He didn't follow-up and send me anything. I feel even more stupid now. He probably thought as well "Look how long she's been here. Shouldn't she know that?" Then I felt even more stupid and think everyones talking about me behind my back. I am on ADHD meds but I cant learn the same way they do..Things at work make me feel depressed and like I'm going to fail; cause I don't process the way they do. They're frustrated..Who can deal with that? |

Hello Idunno36: I'm sorry you're having such a difficult time with your work situation. It is so difficult when everyone you work with seems to get things faster than you. Hopefully you will be able to hang in there long enough to catch up. Thanks for sharing your concerns.

Wow glad to hear I'm not the only one. I just started a new job 1 month ago. and 3 weeks. I feel as if they too are talking about me in how dumb I am. First, I don't seem to grasp verbal instructions, and any conversations whether in person or on phone, I tend to forget what was said. Also learning tasks step by step is much better but that is not how it is done. I have been trained on a half of a task then they add another task and show me just partial of it, then return to another task. It was like bits and pieces here and there until I was able to put them together, but it made me confuse. As of right now, my supervisor is angry for the mistakes I make and for not grasping oral conversations. People tell me to hang on until a medical test comes back to back up incase I resign. The more I stay there the more I feel so dumb and retarded. Just do your best and meanwhile look for another job that would suit your skills.

I agree. It's hard. My meds really help me to slow down and focus more. I'm barelly present without them. Otherwise I drift off in meetings, conversations etc. Then I come back and I have no idea what this person is talking about. Sometimes I try to act like I got it. Other times like with friends I just ask them to repeat themselves lol. At work I'm trying to constantly create ways to help myself learn how to compute what is being relayed to me when I dont understand. Like some system. It's really hard..

It may help to focus on how you learn best and use that method when you need to learn. Everyone learns differently. I seem to learn faster when I see things explained in a diagram or picture. And, self-study is better for me than learning in a classroom or having someone explain things orally to me. Here's a link to the different styles:

are the platform they are attempting to sabotage your performance with. FOCUS, and IGNORE the spin. Trust me, these fear-governed, barely-mediocre idiots will never innovate or improve a single thing. The joiner crowd specializes in creating human wreckage, WASTE, and medical expenses that they will NEVER take RESPONSIBILITY for. You,can the other hand, have taken responsibility for your own training and applied a system to your learning method! This culture is confused about what the workplace really is; the word cozy has ousted the word collaboration. I have a theory that this may stem from difficulty with transition time management based on observations of this last decade. Perhaps, this is why a company with vision and understanding will allow their workers to have MEALS together. Last edited by nowaitaminute; Aug 06, 2016 at 07:55 AM. |
