I've always wondered how you know if you got a job after an interview. I know that, from what I heard, if an interviewer says they are interviewing other people as well than that means you didn't get it. Wasn't sure if that is the case all the time or just some times. Also I once had an interviewer that was being very supportive, like, naming other positions I could apply to in the event I do not get the position. Even though she was being polite, I feel like that could be another sign I didn't get a job.
I feel like when interviewers are either distant or overly supportive, or mention how they will be looking at other candidates first, it is a sign you are not their top priority or a good match. Is that true? What is your take on the subject? Also, lastly, what are some of the biggest no-no's during an interview? I know some of the basics such as not showing insecurity, not being professional, or just coming off as unprepared and disinterested. Are there any others that I am missing? |

Hello rdgrad15,
If an interviewer says they have other people to interview, it is actually often the case. Some firms interview people over two days and use a scoring system so don't assume that you haven't got the job. Usually the interviewer will tell you how they will let you know and when. For some jobs they will let you know a day or so after or even weeks. If you are offered a different position, don't be disappointed, that means they liked you but not for the original position and this could be a step in the door for you. Interview tips - turn up at least 10 minutes early, this shows you are good at time keeping. Be smart in appearance. Smile. Don't talk too fast. Answer the questions honestly. Use previous job experience as examples of how you do things. Think of one question to ask at the end of the interview, this shows you are interested. Thank the interviewers for their time. Good luck!

Do you send a thank you note or thank you email after the interview letting them know you are interested in the position?

Nope, never thought about it and never really even knew whether or not it is appropriate. If it is then maybe I will start doing that. Like a follow up email.
