So today I was fired by one of my two substitute teacher placement agencies. The HR lady called to tell me that they got negative feedback from a teacher I subbed for, who didn't like how I managed her classroom while she was gone. I won't go into details because it's not important.

I still belong to the other substitute teacher placement agency, but this agency bought the other agency out. So, I don't know if I will lose my job with them as default? Also, I can substitute teach in other school districts that don't use either agency. But, those two districts only pay their subs once every 3 weeks instead of bi-weekly, or weekly.

I could use some ideas of what kind of jobs I should apply for. Since I had difficulty finding consistent temp work this summer, I can't rely on the temp agencies to find me something quick either. And, since I applied for emergency assistance once already, I can't anymore. I have to wait 18 months before I'd be eligible again. I'm sure I can get food stamps with no income since its income based. I'm just worried about rent, car payment, car insurance, etc. and I don't want to file bankruptcy.

I envy people who have stable, full-time jobs.

I disagree - the details of the negative feedback ARE important in suggesting other ways of finding employment for you. So what was the negative feedback?

You misunderstood my post, I think. I'm merely asking members here for brainstorming ideas of what types of jobs I should invest my energy into applying for that are not education-related. I am not going to go into any detail about my firing.

Honestly it depends what you are willing to take. If you're desperate and willing to take anything, there are probably a lot of minimum wage jobs out there at restaurants, fast food places, cleaning jobs, etc. I work a minimum wage job stocking shelves and doing aisle maintenance at a large store. I imagine if you're concerned about bankruptcy, you are in a position where you can't afford to be too picky. It's something to think about, if even just a temporary job to help make ends meet.

Can you tell us a little about your education and skill set? That will help us think of ideas for employment. Of course there is the tutoring route - which I'm sure you've thought of. Have you thought of some of these after school programs that need site coordinators? I'm thinking of an organization called Communities in Schools, and there are others like it. I'm not sure what the pay structure is like but it would be working with students, which you obviously have experience doing.

Have you thought about getting into HR? It seems like someone with experience in education may be able to make the segue into an HR career. You'd have to start entry-level most likely, but at least it would be a job and a career path. Check out SHRM. (I forget what the acronym stands for.)

Have you thought of registering on Care.com as a tutor, housekeeper, nanny, babysitter? That could be a place to get income. Same with Rover.com, if you're interested in walking dogs or dog-sitting, it's just a way for some extra income.

Good luck, cielpur. I know how challenging it is to be out of work. Hope something works out for you soon.

If you have a teaching background, how about working as a trainer in pharma? I'm from the UK, so it might be different where you live. But here, a lot of ex teachers go into pharma, not as sales reps, but teaching field based teams on communication, problem solving and so on, as well as one to one coaching. The pay and benefits are very good and many jobs are a lot more secure than substitute teaching.
Thanks for this!

Another place to check is UpWork, it's a freelance website for lots of different things, including resume writing and grant writing (which I use it for). You could pick up some freelance work from home through it. I have done a few jobs through there.

The Mighty lists several remote/work from home jobs on their website. If you search "remote jobs" a few articles will pop up.

NOW I will say be mindful that these jobs have a level of stress when you are dealing with upset customers, but it's a decent job in the crunch, just not for long term--at least not for me.

if you are into teaching: Edmentum is an education company that offers online courses and teaching materials, and currently lists 100 open virtual teaching positions across the U.S. Applicants must be certified to teach the subject they’re applying for at the secondary level in the state they live. Subjects include French, English, Spanish, Sciences, Art and more.

I've seen something called VipKid as well.

Good Luck!

Many corporations have a pretty extensive training group in their HR department. Being on onsite training manager may be an option. They have an extensive program in the company I work for.

Another option, since you obviously have a degree, is some type of management development program. The company I work for has one where they hire about 10 recent college graduates (they don't have to be recent graduates, but it tends to work that way with our company), who then do a combination of management training, rotate through the different divisions in our company, spending a couple months in each, are mentored by our executive management team, and at the end of their 2 year program most get permanent jobs with the company, but have no obligation to stay. They are paid quite well as full time workers, with all the benefits any other full time workers get. It's a very successful program and a lot of corporations have them.

Just a couple of ideas to add to some of the other ideas that have been posted.

These are all great ideas for alternative employment ideas. I am going to explore each one that was suggested. Keep the ideas coming, in case none of the ideas expressed here work out.

It looked like a blog type support site for mental health and other illnesses with an option to join for a forum to me. Not sure where the job references are. Possibly only available to members?
