I started my new job Monday and despite the drive I like it. Everyone is nice and the work is good but I can't find the time to take notes for training. I have a binder but we get busy and I forget to write it down. The computer system.. I saw it as a college student but even that was a crash course....Im still confused with it but then I get busywork or orientation stuff to do and have to focus on that. It isn't bad but I'm scared to tell them to pause and let me write it down. I know it's a stupid fear but I think because of my Aspergers I'm extremely self aware of it (I haven't told yet...had a lovely case of laryngitis this week). I have four years of experience in my field but every place is a little different.... I want this to work but how do you tell people just slow down a bit without looking like an idiot?

If you start scribbling stuff down while they are talking, they should notice that you are taking notes and wait for you to catch up before they continue. It may be easier to ask them to hold up a sec if you are looking at your notebook.
You will look diligent, like you really want to get things right, if you ask them to slow down so you can write that down - it should impress them! |

I’m not sure if you’re expected to take notes, so the following suggestions may not all be useful.
Saying “Could you please speak more slowly?” Will usually prompt people to slow down (and pay more attention to pronounciation) which means you can have a bit more time to take notes. At the end of their explanation, if you are comfortable, you could ask them to reformulate briefly (in one of two sentences) what they said so that when you get a bit of time you can note that summary down and later go in more details. Perhaps the least stressful option in terms of interaction would be to note down key words or doodle a concept in your binder so that later you can from these clues remember what you were told. I hope this helped. |

I had a lot of downtime in the past few days so I try to cat h up with notes there. I don't feel as afraid asking for help as everyone asks the boss and the lead guy who is training me and they even discuss matters amongst themselves so it feels a bit more open asking questions. Thanks
