Well, that was an interesting turn of events. My annual review was supposed to happen today, and I got laid off beforehand and instead.

They said it's strictly financial, and not performance-based. Then the CEO listed a bunch of clients in my dept who had cut back on services with us, laying out to me that our dept as a whole is not financially doing well.

He almost laid me off last fall, but kept me on, and had told me then that I am the highest paid in my dept., also explaining to me that my dept as a whole is not cutting it financially.

And no new clients have come on board since then.

This is my third layoff in my lifetime.

I'm not thrilled about it, but at the same time, it could be a blessing. I didn't like my company's leadership, most especially my boss and team manager.

I thought they ran things in an upside down and backwards way.

Maybe this is an opportunity to finally land the position I want, while not dealing with the stress of poor leadership decisions.

Eh, whatever. I will land of my feet, as I always do.

Ok, however, I am slightly bitter. I was the TOP performer in my department. And they let me go??? I was also the highest paid.

Alas, being the highest paid was probably the key factor. Let's hope things will work out for the best and you'll ultimately get an even better job,.

Ok, so I see positives and negatives to this. But right now, I feel angry. I work hard. I did well for my clients. And I was the top performer. It feels SO unfair.

I am sorry to hear you got laid off. However, as someone who has been laid off, I can tell you that a job does not define you as a person. I learned a new language while I was not working. I am sure you will find another job which may be more suitable for you. As I can tell by reading your messages, you weren't happy in your job anyways. So, it may be to your benefit to have the opportunity to find a job which makes you happy. I work to survive and have a job which I find enjoyable now. But, it is not perfect and probably won't last until I can retire. I will be like you looking for another job soon. I am thinking of becoming a real estate agent here. However, my passing the test for the real estate license will take some time for me. As you can see, jobs come and go for some people, but life continues. Thus, don't let this be a set back but an opportunity to get out of a bad situation. Best wishes!
Thanks for this!

I agree that a job doesn't define a person. I know I will find another. I just hope that's sooner than later.

Today I’ve been in bed. Guess I feel kind of depressed about this.

I thought my company was relatively ok and safe from possible layoffs.

It’s also quite the drastic change- to go from working with my colleagues every day for two years to suddenly being told you’re being let go and there’s no chance for goodbyes.

I texted a few co workers to say farewell last night. The only other female on my team was sad to see me go. She and I really got along. A female director offered me her reference, which was nice.

And my CEO said he can introduce me to some people for potential employment.

I know I wasn’t happy working there but it still stings. You work hard for a company, and it’s like a slap in the face.

I put on a good front when HR and the CEO told me they were letting me go. I remained very professional. I still wanted certain work I had done to be sent to my clients to wrap up. Even while being laid off I wanted to finish my work. Crazy.

I don’t know. It sucks, bottom line. So today I’m indulging and am staying in bed.

Reasons to be happy about. a layoff:

I disliked my company's leadership
My boss was undermining my success at work
Some clients were very annoying and demanding
Now I have the time to truly devote myself 100% to a job search
Now I can take some much needed mental health time off
Perhaps the extra COVID unemployment benefit will continue - this is supposed to end tomorrow, so I pray they will extend the boosted benefits
Maybe I will find a far better match for myself
It's not the end of the world, as long as I can continue to cover all expenses and rent

I’m sorry to hear this. I’m surprised this happened to you but then I can also see that changes in the economy are going to affect jobs. I know it’s hard not to take this personally. I truly hope you are blessed with a better job opportunity. By better I mean one that is a healthier work environment where you are happier.

Thanks soo much.

I really do think it's a blessing. I did take it personally at first and it took me a full day to turn around my thinking and my negative thoughts on the whole situation. But now I get a much needed mental health break and I can get paid for it, I no longer have to deal with a toxic work environment, and I no longer have to deal with a bully toxic boss. AND, I can devote myself now 100% to the job search. So in a way, it's the best possible scenario.

Great attitude!
Don't beat yourself up if you do fall off the cliff. You have received an unexpected blow, and you will probably be all over the place for a while. And that would be normal.
I've found for myself to just allow the feelings to come up without stuffing them down, and they'll pass sooner.

Good luck finding the best possible job for yourself.

Thank you!!

I think this go around I will remain on course. It's been a few days now, and after 1 day, I felt better.

I think as time goes on, I'll only just appreciate my time off more and more, feeling happier and happier to be out of that unhealthy and despicable place. But you're right -- I may go downwards about it again. If I do, I am sure I will rebound quickly enough.

And thanks... I believe I can land a far better job. I feel a bit wiser now and better equipped to work on weeding out the bad ones.

I dropped off my computer and keys at the office today and spoke with my CEO. He graciously offered to review my resume, have a drink together this week to discuss my career path, and to put feelers out for me. I suppose I couldn’t ask for anything more. I’m very grateful. Thank goodness he really likes me.

Another positive? I got my nails done today, I got my hair cut (finally) this weekend, I'm going to the beach with a couple girlfriends next week, and I'm taking a mini vacation. I have to admit: I am far happier no longer working in that God awful, toxic and horrific work environment. Now I just need our Senate to pass the second Cares Act with a bump in unemployment pay, and I can rest easy that I can meet all of my expenses. Even if they decrease it from the additional $600 they've been paying, and even if it's $200-300, I can still meet all my expenses and rent and not have to stress over money.

I'm being referred to TripAdvisor by a friend's husband who works there. Ah, who knows.. the job market is SO saturated with applications right now, but it's worth a shot and a referral sometimes is all it takes.

Well, it's been a little over one week of unemployment, and I must say, this is doing wonders for my mental health right now. I feel sooooo much better, being gone from a toxic work environment, I am far less stressed out, I am happier, and I feel free.

They really did me a HUGE favor. So I thank God that I was laid off.

And I received my unemployment acceptance within just one week! That's unheard of. Usually it takes 2-3 weeks to process your application. So, I got my benefits.

Now I just need the gov't to pass the law to extend additional unemployment benefits. That will really help us right now. That's the only thing that has me a bit on edge right now -- is whether they will pass another extended and enhanced benefit for the unemployed.
