My psych. put me on Provigil today due to the cravings I still so often get for meth, plus my lack of energy and problems I still have due to when I was using. She said Provigil can have some of the same effects meth has, such as the high energy, more alertness and awareness of your surroundings, can make you more upbeat and excited, etc, etc... Me, being as depressed as I've been, accepted it with open arms.
Do you think taking a medication that has some of the same effects as your drug of choice is wise or healthy if it'll keep you off the drug of choice itself? Just wondering, gotta know what I'm getting myself into with this.

Bama…
I was strung out on meth in 1970 when I was in the Army. I had just left the Nam where I was strung out on Opium. I came down off the “O” and immediately started doing speed. I shot up that crap until at 6’ 3” I weighed maybe 130 lbs. Meth is the most corrosive drug I know anything about. I had open sores on my arms and back that didn’t go away for months after I got clean. My hair was falling out and my teeth bled like crazy every time I brushed them. Not to mention the psychoses and paranoia that is all over that addiction. I know a little about this stuff. I don’t make a habit out of second guessing medical professionals, they know a great deal. But you need to ask yourself if you are living vicariously the life of a speed freak through this drug. Take time to meditate and ask this power greater than ourselves that same question. Baby, be real careful. You don’t want to go back there. What is Provigil made out of? If speed or any of it’s derivates are major ingredients, or even on the list at all, I wouldn’t eat it. You can tough it out until the cravings, with the help of the steps, subside. Remember, speed kills. When I was crankin’, back in the day, there was an expression we used… “there are on old speed freaks” Even the heads in the 60’s knew that. Be real careful Richard |

Yeah, I still had scars from my 'meth myte' sores that I picked at when I was using, my gums bled a lot as well when I'd brush my teeth.
This is what I got as far as ingredients go from this site... Active Ingredient: modafinil. Inactive Ingredients: lactose, microcrystalline cellulose, pregelatinized starch, croscarmellose sodium, povidone, and magnesium stearate. http://www.provigil.com/physician/ed...spx#question18 As far as my addiction goes, I'm not doing it to take the place of meth, because I've tried taking medications to take place of it in the past when I first started getting clean. I know that no medication gives me the same high as meth once did... I just need SOMETHING to help with my energy and cravings, but moreso my energy... All I want to do is sleep and not move.

I was srtung out on Meth and Ice about 6 years ago. It was very hard to get off of. The energy level and alertness was gone and I felt so empty and felt like I was going to use it. I have been to MANY treatment centers for addiction and never listened to them. But now that I am clean, it is all coming back to me and making sense. Some people need to be weaned off drugs to make it as easy as possible to get off of it. Some, like me, just went through cold turkey and suffered. I figured I was the one who had made the mistake in starting and I was the one who was going tom kick it on my own. Some of the withdrawls I went through with different drugs i would not wish on my worst enemy. But this is how I felt I HAD to do it, by myself, on my own. If meds are needed to wean anyone off drugs and the Dr. knows what they are doing, then I feel it is OK. Like I remember hearing in a meeting, some people called AA a crutch. Well, when you are a cripple that aint bad. I feel the same may go for this situation. Do what you feel is best for you and for you get off of any drugs. Just getting clean is the important thing to me. need any help, PM me and I am more than happy to help any way I can.

I don't take meth or eva will but I do take acid and that for me is the best drug but the problem is that I am starting to get cravings for it and i know how dangerous drugs can be, but I don't care I just want it so I'm actualy telling u that u can use just be responsible I've known guys who have taken the real harsh drugs and they are fine they don't go out and steal stuff for drug money the just go out and party but with drugs so if u do use just be responsible thats all.

I used to feel that way about drugs just be responsible .. that how i felt about ciggs to .. next thing i knew i was smoking 2 packs aday 15 yrs later. Ive learned one thing in my life there is no responsible way to take drugs like meth.
Acid's or LSD only real craving is mental .. where meth is physcial beyond what anyone can explain or even dream. The high is so great the craving is sooo great .. all i can say, like i did with ciggs and things i made it off and anyone else who can avoid them or get off them i give you my best wishes and a huge concrats .. while you maynot be happy now .. in time you will wake from this nitemare. |

I've already went through detox with meth, and I can tell you, there's no responsible way for an addict to use meth. I was and am an addict, I just don't use for today. I went through 3 agonizing days of pure physical pain and sickness from detoxing off meth. I still suffer mental withdrawal from time to time. I know if I use meth again, I will start back down the road I was on, but probably get worse. I did steal, I did cheat, I did lie, I did lose all my morals I had, I lost who I was... I just can't do that again, not for today.

Bama,
Provigil is NOT meth. Actually it is a treatment for narcolepsy but has psychiatric uses as well. I take 200- 400 mg as needed--there is no rush, no high and it is not habit forming. I see absolutely no similarities between the two. |

I know what it's primarily used for, but I was put on it for more alertness and energy and meth cravings, because it works on the same receptor as meth, just in a positive way. But since I was put on Provigil and it's gotten into my system good, it's working well... You're right though, it does not leaves me feeling any sort of high and doesn't make me wanna use more as a narcotic would.
I did find out some interesting information on Provigil, though. They are giving it to a lot of our men overseas to keep them more alert for combat. They are giving it to them in really high dosages to keep them awake and alert to their surroundings. Some are still receiving Adderall, but I think it'd be best to give all of them Provigil, Adderall is just too habit forming, in my opinion.
