I've been addicted to Benadryl for quite a while. I started taking it as a sleep aid, just one 25 mg pill. Then one day I decided to take two pills. I noticed that I got this really "loopy" feeling, and for some reason, I liked it A LOT. One day when work was going really bad due to undermedicated ADHD, I came home and took 30 Benadryl. To be honest, I think it was somewhat of a subconscious suicide attempt. Ever since then, I've been taking 14-20 Benadryl once, sometimes twice, a day. I really don't know who to talk to about this. I tried to talk to my mom, but she's somewhat of a fanatic who thinks that a little bit of prayer solves every problem. And I now have horribly decaying teeth, like some meth addicts can get. I'm guessing this is because Benadryl dries up all your saliva, just as meth can do. I'm probably going to need a full set of dentures, and I'm only 26 years old.

Do you have a doctor you can talk to? I'd look at local drug treatment programs too, see if there isn't some counseling and/or support with some ideas of what you can do. I'd fix it so I did not have any cash/it was inconvenient to buy them or I'd not allow them in my house, etc. (I did that once with not allowing myself to go home until 8:00 p.m. everyday, trying to get myself to quit isolating, etc.) You are the only person who can really do anything about the problem they are giving you. Maybe go to a dentist and "confess" see if your teeth can be salvaged?

Wow haven't heard of that one before. I have used it a lot for sleep in the past. Is that similar to when people down a couple of bottles of cough syrup to get high. Is it the diphenhydramine HCL that does it?

Thats a lot of benydryl and can't be good on the body at all.

Either way a drug is a drug, getting high is getting high, and addiction is addiction. Like Perna says you need some help in overcoming this.

I reaked havoc on my already bad teeth years ago with meth. I told a very old school dentist one time and he looked at me in shock. On and off with the dental insurance makes things tough. They can do amazing things though and slowly over the years my teeth have gotten better when I can afford dental work. They can give you implants nowadays. forget dentures.

Somewhat the same as downing cough syrup. Different chemicals, similar effects. Cough syrups contain Dextromethorphan (more commonly known as DXM). Downing cough syrup can sometimes be a little more dangerous though because a lot if these young kids don't always read the ingredient labels, and some cough syrups contain acetaminophen, which can be can be fatal by causing liver failure, even just at moderately high doses.

Find a 12 step meeting! Addiction is addiction whatever chemical you use. 12 step programs got me into recovery years ago...just try 1 and see what you think...
Thanks for this!

You came to the right place for help. There are a lot of smart people and people who have been through the same thing as you.

I tried to commit suicide more than 20 years ago by taking 30+ Benadryl and it didn't do anything except make my mouth reallly dry. But like someone said, an addiction is an addiction and you should get help.

Someone else said to give your money to somebody to hold so you can't get the Benadryl. That may actually be a good idea. If you don't have any money, you can't buy it.

Yeah. The responses have really given me some strength to just try to simply stop. I haven't taken any so far tonight and the only thing I'm experiencing is I'm feeling like I'm panicking. I do have anxiety and am prescribed lexapro at the highest recommended dose but its really not doing anything. I also found online that benadryl can act somewhat like xanax or ativan when taken in high doses, so that might be part of the reason I felt the need to keep taking them. No way I'm asking my doc for ativan though. Not even gonna get started on that stuff. Heard it can be addicting.

The one thing you can do immediately is to start tapering down the dose.

I take lorazepam (Ativan) PRN. I'm not addicted to it. There's nothing wrong with it.

OK. Maybe I can ask my Dr about the ativan. I don't know anything about addiction but I really hope the first night of withdrawal is the worst, because I'm over it. I didn't sleep at all, was violently vomiting, and uncontrollably shaking. Could've just been all psychological, either way I'm glad its over.

You should talk to your doc about getting through the withdrawal. Hopefully it won't be bad. If anxiety is the underlying issue it can be treated if you are responsible with it.
