I noticed there wasn't a specific subcategory for shopping addiction so thought I'd post in general.

I have had compulsive shopping /shopping addiction issues since I was 18 I am now 23. I tend to fixate on wanting certain items and sometimes go on impulse shopping even if I don't have the money to spare. It started my senior year in high school as a coping mechanism for everything I went through that year and I have had times in my life since where it wasn't as bad. This last month I had some issues with it again but it wasn't as a coping really cause I have been overall well lately. I just collect certain things and then realize I want more of them or different item in same category and I impulsively buy them even when I need to save money.
I have been good this week and no buying anything other than food ,coffee, gas.. I just go through times where it is really hard to resist. .
does anyone else have this problem?
What do you do to help prevent too much spending/shopping?
Feel free to share your story as well.

Hi,

Welcome to PC! Recently I have noticed I think I'm starting to have a problem with shopping. I'm still learning how to cope with it. You are not alone.
Thanks for this!

I also have the same problem. I buy impulsively. Some days are worse than others.

Not sure this helps, but my shopping sprees happen during mania. Part of my bipolar disorder. Now, I just stay out of stores as much as possible. Some people may view that as unhealthy - but that is the best strategy for me. I also stay away from places online, like eBay.

It's a huge problem for me, and has been all my life. I shopped my way into 44K of credit card debt and had to declare bankruptcy.

Even now when I'm on a very limited income, I tend to shop impulsively. The only thing that stops me, is keeping very little money in my main chequing account - just enough to cover my basic expenses, so I can't on-line shop from it, and then I have another account for discretionary expenses - but that includes food, so I can't really impulse shop too much.

I feel like a total loser for not being able to manage my money better at 47.

it is helpful.
I don't have BP . I feel like that's what I have to do too with online shopping and most stores, but it's hard to stay away from stores when I work in one.

I am sorry that you have struggled like that. It is good that you found a way to manage your finances. I need to to start doing something like that.

Shopping went hand in hand with my addiction to opiates/benzos. I used to love to get loaded and go on a spree. I have to be very careful about not overspending.

I shall buy everything, pretend I am a millionaire, because debt would be the least of my problems. Sorry if I sound crazy, I not thinking straight.

Okay, some sanity has returned. Sorry if that last post seemed crazy. I do wish I could buy myself something now though.

Yes, me too. It got much better though, when I went to a few Debtors Anonymous meetings in the early 90s. I was basically scared out of reckless spending.
Thanks for this!

Due to PayPal's pay after delivery I am ashamed to say I spent $500 without realizing it. I spent $1,000 easily without knowing it. It was awful have to ask my mom to borrow $500. I was depressed at the time & I'm bipolar. I have never been good with money. Shopping & sugar are my addictions and it's hard to break both habits.

When I spoke to my aunt recently she said I sounded like I had the blues when I went on my shopping spree. She said I only sounded happy when I was buying something.

I don't use Pay pal pay after delivery.
I try to keep my credit cards off my pay pal or online shopping sites..
I fail sometimes esp when I have to use a site for birthday or christmas presents then I sometimes "forget to delete the card" and buy things... it's a pain...
I also work at a store which makes it hard too..
I have been good mostly past 2 weeks but then spent $50 mostly books ... only one non-book but my hours have been cut so I can't afford too..

also thank you all for replies.
Thanks for this!
