Hi,
I just wanted some feedback from those of you who have taken meds to help stop drinking...meds that stop cravings etc. My doc talked to me about it today. I'm getting desperate but am already on a few meds for MI, and suffering the side-effects. Would just like to hear what you think of them. Thanking you in advance, kp

I took Naltrexone (Revia) for a while when I was stopping opiates. It never did anything for me, for alcohol cravings, but I know a few people who had huge success with it.
There's also Campral. I haven't tried it, as it's contraindicated if you have a history of depression, but again I know a few people who says it really helps them. The third I know of is Gabapentin. It's prescribed more for marajuana cravings, but also helps some people with alcohol. From my observation, it's a bit hit and miss when it comes to anti-craving meds as to what will work for a person. For me, I take Antabuse (Disulfiram) That's the med that makes you violently ill if you drink on it. You have to be really committed to not drinking to take it, because if you do drink on it, you get really really sick (I know I tried). For me, my alcoholism is so bad that I need the disincentive to stay stopped. So far it's working for me. splitimage |

Hi,
Sorry you are struggling. Glad that you have the courage to try and get sober. Unless you need a medical detox from very high consumption withdrawals to prevent DTs - in which case they would use Valium or Librium, I would try and do it straight up ball out style. OR go the Antabuse route. I think it was important to me to feel the full pain and misery of my early recovery to really get humble enough to understand how sick I had become. I don't know if I would have found lasting recovery if I had watered down the experience with another substance. Good luck and please keep us posted. Thanks, moogs

I was sober for a year on the vivitrol (naltrexone in pill form) injection. Only thing is you can't take opiates while your on it which wasn't a problem for me...at the time.

Well at the time I didn't have insurance. This was probably 7 years ago. I was going to a state run office for all my pdocs, meds, therapists. They paid about $1000 a month for each injection and then they lost their state funding. So I got off the injection and slowly went back to drinking ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Thanks RxQueen.
I am not familiar with these meds. I like hearing and learning about new things in addiction treatment. moogs

I have been taking Camprol. I like my wine too much. Struggling with weather to drink or not to drink. It sure isn't helping me in the weight loss department. Camprol helped me before some years ago. It says to take it even if you start drinking but I found that doesn't do much good to make you stop that way. I think a person has to make a commitment to themselves to not drink for the Camprol to work.

There are meds to help you stop and then meds to help you stay stopped. The implied goal is abstinence from all illicit substances.
