I have social phobia, and am used to walking when I do my grocery shopping. Mostly I have had to be with someone when I do this. However, I find when I am on my bicycle, the people that see me, will be further from me, and the "confrontation" will be over faster, so now I have bought myself some bicycle-bags to strap on the carrier. Looking forward to some more independent shopping, and less anxiety-provoking trips. bicycling past the judging people
plus, I will be able to go further and can reach more stores.

I wonder if any of you have some tricks up the sleeve to ease you if you have the same problem as me?

Ramses

Hi Ramses,

That is a great idea. I too cycle to the shops and it means that you can cycle passed your neighbours, maybe smile at them - but you don't have to stop!

You don't have to answer questions, struggle for conversation, any of that stuff. It's a winning idea.

I would recommend the smile though, if you feel up to it, or maybe a friendly wave. I have found that this makes me feel good inside too, and I don't feel so much that I'm avoiding people (although of course I am really avoiding them).

The real secret of social phobia IMHO is to get over being afraid of people, but I have never learned that one.

Welcome to the forum!

Cheers, M

That is an excellent Idea~! One thing I do is take music with me like a walkman . I sometimes have a hard time if I have to drive to places I am not familiar with so the radio really helps in the vehicle too. I also like Kimmy's idea . I do that too. Or chewing gum. That seems to help with tension sometimes too with me.Hope these ideas help you out.Take care and Good luck!

Thanks for the ideas! I don't know about the water, I usually do not feel thirsty when I am away for a short distance. I always wave to those I live with in the group home, but don't really know the other neighbors..

smiling would only be an option if they look friendly and not sour, and I am in the mood for it of course. bicycling past the judging people

I haven't had a portable music device since the tape ages, I will have to think about this one, maybe buy an iPod or something like it.. I don't want to look awkward, but the music might help me...
