When I was a child, I was terrified when the wind blew the swings outside, or the clothes on the line. I would have quite a fit until my mother would go outside and stop the swings, or move me where I could see outside. Has anyone had a similar experience?

When I was a kid, a long, long time ago, I remember being terrified of the rain... even if it just sprinkled. I'd cry and scream in terror! Never figured that one out. Now I love the rain! I still hate the wind, though, although I don't remember being afraid of it even in west Texas and all the sand storms. Fear of moving things

Thanks, it's just something I've always been curious about. I am a recovering alcoholic (sober 15yrs.) and am acquainted with depression and anxiety but have been successfully treated for depression for some time. Anxiety has not been a major problem for me since I've worked through the Twelve Steps. I guess I've really wondered if there was a connection somehow to my childhood perceptions.

Do you suppose that it may have been the reaction of those around you? When I was a kid, there were no such things as clothes driers. I've often wondered if it was my mom's reaction to the rain or the wind when she had clothes hanging on the line that caused me to freak. Fear of moving things

Sure there could be a connection! Seems you get triggered... and it goes back a long ways? 12 steps is a good program but it doesn't solve all the issues you might have stemming from the past. If it doesn't upset you, you might try to find out what causes/caused these feelings.

I honestly don't know. I remember at a later age telling my brother and sister I though I was an alien. They remember it too. I think it was from watching the "Twilight Zone" too much. Seriously, almost all alcoholics had that strange feeling of not quite belonging for as long they can remember. It is a feeling which tends to make one distrustful and fearful of others. I don't know it is an instinct gone awry or a genetic thing.

It would be interesting to find out. At that age I don't remember anything causing any problems in my family. My main trigger now is feeling discounted. I can usually spot it early on and take steps to resolve the feelings and have learned how better to get my needs met and talk to myself in positive ways. Still, it can be very strong when it happens and sometimes takes me by surprise.

There is usually a reasoning behind fears like that, what happened when you were a kid, was it a movie, a dream? Usually there something that causes the fear.

I personally feared buses, lightning ect... lightning I guess because you read up on people getting hit by lightning even though it's rare, trees coming down on houses ect.. . strong winds I'd always thing it was a huirricain or a tornado, and we don't experince that here in Ontario, even though we did get a tail of one yrs ago when I was a kid.

have you really thought about this to find the cause?

I was only about 4 years old when that was happening, so I don't really know. I was reminded lately by my sister who is 8 years older than I. She had though she had read of a form of epilepsy that could have caused it but I have researched it and can find nothing that exhibits those particular symptoms. Have a good Mon.! -Dave.

If the doctors never told you that you have epilipsy then it may not have been it, I guess it could, maybe ask your parents?

You just have to kinda talk yourself out of the fear...

Will the wind break my window and hurt me? No

That sort of thing, cause you know the sounds and noises that you hear are not harmful, so just if you get scared of when the sound of a big truck whizzes by ask yourself that question, like the abouve.

I haven't heard of anyone fearing moving things, unless it's one constant thing like it use to be with me and buses..

It's interesting.

Take care,

Hi texdave...are we talking about any kind of anxiety or fear? I have one that I know of. I get anxious about having to make phone calls. I don't know why that is. I don't even like having to order a pizza. Can you imagine? A woman who doesn't like to talk on the phone! That would be me. I've gotten better about it over the years..but if I can avoid it or get someone else to do it, I will in a flash.

I guess we are, and thank God for answering machines! The last job I had required me to be on the phone a LOT and I grew to hate my cell phone! I'm a doer and not a talker! I personally think phones are pretty intrusive. Great tools, but intrusive. I would much rather speak to someone in person, and I do like socializing, but much more on my terms. It's funny that men are generally more averse to phone conversation. I suppose it's because we are so visually oriented, it's more comfortable for us to see who we're talking to. In your case, it's probably one of the less bothersome phobias. Have you always felt that way about it?

Yeah, I guess I have. At least I can't think of a time that I haven't felt that way. I have to answer calls at work but I'm pretty comfortable with that most of the time. Most calls will be for orders and I'm prepared for those. I know I'm not as bad at answering calls as making them. I find that if I have to make a phone call, I suffer from some anxiety about it. I have to mentally prepare myself to actually do it. And if I get an answering machine, I'm liable to hang up rather than talk. I'll often write down what I want to say beforehand. There have been instances where I've made a call only to have gone into panic mode and totally blank - no idea what I was calling about. Very embarrassing.
