Hi all,

Please tell us which anxiety medication you believe is the best and why.

I'll start. Paxil was wonderful on keeping my anxiety at bay, but unfortunately it made me gain a lot of weight so I had to discontinue it.

I've tried other meds, but for me, none has been as effective as Paxil.

Propranolol, far and away the best. It's actually a blood pressure medication and has very few side effects. It's also helpful with PTSD.

I'm on Clonazepam now, and it's been, by far, the most helpful of the meds I've taken to treat anxiety. I'm more focused, and can self-motivate more easily. When a stressful situation comes up, I can deal with it calmly, and get through it.

Lorazepam works wonders. it quells any panic attack. unfortunately I can only take it as PRN since it has a very sedating effect on you.

Zoloft used to kick my anxiety. now i'm off that and take Remeron for my antidepressant instead, my GAD has gotten worse.

I'm taking Klonopin prn and it seems to really help. I was taking it three times a day but my anxiety level has decreased so I don't take it very often anymore. It does make me sleepy however.

Lexapro & Klonopin eradicates anxiety like nothing I've ever taken. Here's a tip; drink a glass of white grapefruit juice with your benzo. It intensifies the effect.

Current Daily Meds:
3mg Klonopin
300mg Wellbutrin
10mg Lexapro
200mg Seroquel

Because of some major addiction issues, I've never used anti-anxiety meds (except low dose Buspar for insomnia, not successful) but I recently got some Magnolia Bark extract, an herb used in traditional Chines medicine. Not much information on it but it is used in Asia for various purposes including anxiety.

Well, I'm a recovering alcoholic (6 yrs sober) and my primary care doc still gives me benzos. However, because of my history he closely monitors my refill activity. Yeah, Klonopin is a mood altering substance but it actually takes away alcohol cravings, in my case, if that makes sense. But, I completely understand what you mean

Clonazepam really helps me. I also just started taking seroquel and that has REALLY made a difference in my anxiety levels. I feel much more confident and a lot less anxious, and I'm an anxious all of the time person. Propranolol also helps me.

I abused alcohol for many years because of my anxiety. I'd rather be on clonazepam than drinking myself to oblivion every night. I also don't have any abuse issues on it.

I also take alprazolam PRN if I have a severe anxiety attack/panic situation, since the clonazepam doesn't help with that. But alprazolam really is a *****. For awhile that was the only benzo I was on, and in the end it wasn't good. I became dependent on it and had withdrawals between doses, which definitely DID NOT help my anxiety at all.

I use to have panic attacks appear out of nowhere! One day my girlfriend and I were sitting in the mall's food court and it hit me like a ton of brinks. Personally, I'm afraid of Xanax because of the very low half life. It gets out of my system too quickly, drops me wanting another dose. So, to prevent the untimely attacks I take Klonopin three times a day and it has held the attacks at bay for several years now. Instead of popping a Xanax when I feel the attack coming on I simply keep my system saturated with kpin and for me it does the trick.

Current Daily Meds:
3mg Klonopin
300mg Wellbutrin
10mg Lexapro
200mg Seroquel

Klonopin is the most effective anti anxiety med I've taken. Antidepressants never helped, they made it worse. Propranolol helps me a LOT with my anxiety about driving, before I started taking it I would have a lot of panic attacks while driving. Perphenazine is the other one I take, and it helps too. It's a typical antipsychotic but at low doses it helps anxiety, it's a pretty good medication but I don't think it's used very often anymore because psychiatrists are pressured into using new meds that cost more.

My cocktail of klonopin, perphenazine and propranolol works fairly well. I'm still anxious pretty much all of the time, but it's 90% better than it used to be, and I can function just fine even with a busy and socially taxing schedule (I prefer to be alone). On weekends I don't even need the klonopin, the propranolol and perphenazine is enough when I don't have to be social.

Oh and Buspar is garbage. Don't ask for buspar. It's no better than placebo for most people.

I have to admit my self at alcohol rehabilitation and do several treatment because i drink excessively just to cope with my anxiety and try to escape from it. at first i thought it was really helping me because whenever i'm drunk i can talk to several people even to stranger Alcohol took away the shyness and self-consciousness. i feel normal without knowing that i already have an addiction.

Lexapro worked pretty well when I first started taking it about 4 years ago. Now, it doesn't seem to have the same effect that it used to. Tried Klonopin on a PRN basis and it did nothing. Same with Ativan other than making me feel extremely off balance, almost like I was drunk without feeling drunk (if that makes any sense). I go back in May for a med check and I think I'm going to see if my pdoc can switch me to something other than Lexapro.

That's exactly what my pdoc told me. He said it doesn't have any side effects because it doesn't work at all. lol

Amitriptyline just made me sleepy. Isn't it a trycyclic antidepressant? I haven't heard of those being prescribed for anxiety, but I guess that could make sense.

The propananol is for anxiety , the doc thinks amytriptiline will get rid of constant headache, with this headache I also get a visual problem where I cant seem to focus on my central vision , but I think amytriptiline is making this worse , I keep trying to tell my doctors that I don't think some of my symptoms are connected with dep/anx .

Plus , in UK I've just read that for pregabalin alone there were 8 million prescriptions a year , and production and ingredient costs £65 per one prescription, NHS prescriptions cost about£8 per prescription, I think gabba pentin was introduced later which costs less to produce.
Bye

When I was put on buspar it made me SO SICK. Seriously, like it's an evil version of a benzo or something. It made the world spin, like I was drunk and on the verge of puking. I hated it.

For me, it's Xanax XR. I take 1 mg in the morning and 1 mg at night. Unless I have extreme situations going on, this helps me keep calm.
