I was wondering if the cases outside of Mexico have been mild because those are the person to person transmission cases and those cases in Mexico that have been severe are because they are from the source of the animals who are infected??????????

I heard just 20 confirmed cases and another 61 are being investigated, which is much different than the frantic anxiety evoking headlines splashing about that there have been 81 cases.
Good to be alert and cautious, but let's see where this goes before we panic. ![]() |

imo I think its great the way the WHo and everyone has reported on this and kept us all updated.
For once hopefully we are being given the imfo we all need My son was due to go to a field trip to albany tomorrow. It would have kids from NYC there. Many of them. To big of a chance in my eyes. Living In NY , Ny having many cases of it . I will say i am worryed. As I would with anything like this. I am very pleased one of the Dads , my sons friend stepped in to help me. Our 2 kids will not be going. Better safe than sorry at this point. |

[quote=thelionkinglives;1007507]O.k. & I wasn't rattling your chain...I'm a math major & I'm naturally persnickity about numbers & statistical references.
No problem, it never entered my mind to be honest. A math major...that's my worst subject, I can't imagine majoring in it. I can test out of any English/writing class but give me a basic algebraic equation and I am stumped. I have the math skills of a middle schooler, lol. |

Freaking out a bit- I have been sick with a "cold" for the last few days and today I woke up and my head is killing me and I feel sick to my stomach. I took my temp and it's about 101. I don't think I would be so worried but NM just started a hotline and is telling anyone who is sick to go to their doctor since we are right on the border of Mexico. I don't really want to call because than I feel like people will know how paranoid I am so maybe I will give it a day or two, maybe this is the peak since I have had symptoms for a few days.

Alright things are getting a little outta hand...
I took my oldest son to the doctor today, because he had a baseball game Saturday & it was 50 degrees & raining...he has developed a slight cough.... I joked with him that he had the squirrel flu... ![]() The doctors office was getting absolutely outraged by the number of people calling thinking they had this swine flu... He is very insistant that it is being intentionally over hyped by the CDC to encourage scientific funding for their next vaccine... He said it's no different than the bird flu scare, sars scare, & few other that he rattled off while we were in there.I mean, if our long time pediatrician who is one of the few medical people I've come to trust over the years isn't stressing it. I'm not... 61 people that are almost all treated & released is nothing to get overly conserned about....it is the flu that's it. Before it's done a few hundred may get it, or even a thousand but it's not like our faces are going to start melting off. ![]() This is same junk the CDC did under Bush, the more things change the more they stay the same ![]() |

It isn't the virus that is the problem. What makes it more dangerous is the results of our immune system reacting to the virus. In Mexico those who died are in their 20's and 30's, the people with the strongest immune systems. The lungs fill up with inflammatory cells from fighting the infection so for once the weaker your immune system the better. Tamiflu works on this virus, however, so if you get it take Tamiflu and it will stop it from getting worse and even get you better. One of the first signs that you have it and are really sick is shortness of breath.

The people that died were already in the hospital, so their immunesystem couldnt have been great
Like mentioned before it's just a new variant of the flu. But it's like with watching a scary movie, comfortable 'griezelen' as we call it in Dutch. Means something like shuddering, getting the creeps. Ok... this is my view of the whole hype anyways.

Lol, I read that too but really someone like myself, who suffers from panic attacks daily always has shortness of breath. I was lying in bed last night and I kept thinking "I can't breathe, I should call 911!" Realistically though I feel like that at least five times a day. My fever is gone, still not feeling 100% and I hated sending my oldest to school today. A lot of his kids from his class recently moved here from Mexico and while the school posted a sheet saying that they are taking all sickness in school seriously and kids will be sent to the ER right away if they get sick, it makes me very nervous. I am trying not show him how worried I am so I sent him off like it was a normal day.

It's really irritating me when the government tells people not to panic and it's not that different from the regular flu and then say "We're going to find more cases. We're going to find more severe cases and I expect that we'll continue to see additional deaths", or things like "It is clear that the virus is spreading and we don't see evidence of it slowing down at this point". Then they say they can have a vaccine soon while other reports say it will be more difficult. They are making it seem like Outbreak or 28 Days Later, and now they have upped the alert. I wish they would just have an opinion one way or the other. Either it's something that is dangerous but preventable and treatable or it's going to get worse and tons of people will die.

Good resources What, Me Worry? Swine Flu
For folks with ocd This afternoon I noticed that I'm getting upset, reading and talking a little too much about this swine flu. I have challenges with anxiety and I also have some experience with keeping myself relatively calm and stable. So I'm going to use this as an opportunity to practice my skills. I'm going to keep most of my learning about this flu to sources like the Center for Disease Control and the World Health Organization, pay attention to the facts, then get on with my life. I'm going to regularly distract myself with other activity, get off the computer, do housework, get exercise, do some fun light reading etc. I remind myself that triggering anxiety and wearing myself out doesn't help any. ![]()

Just want to say that I'm anxious too, though I'm trying not to be. I work in a school and they were discussing precautions today. I heard of a school that closed because of a probable case of swine flu.
I am supposed to work at an event with a friend, collecting money at the check-in table. She doesn't want to do it any more. Are we supposed to stop our lives, or what? I worry about my adult kids, too. Life is stressful enough for anxious people. How do we cope? I like your ideas, Cedar. I've got to try not to think about it so much. |

A microbiologist that I know told me that these types of viruses die out (bird flu and all those from the last decade) because of the mortality the virus cannot spread. He said that smart viruses do not kill their hosts. And if you think back this is exactly what happened with all of those past scary viruses.

I'm with you on the hypochondria. I wasn't trying to be mean but I told my husband not to come home from work, lol. He's a foreman for a roofing company and since we live on the border a lot of the people under him are legal mexicans but many have family that come here either to visit or live on a regular basis. He works out of town five days a week and comes home on weekends and I just called him and asked him if he could just stay put for a while lol. He knows me so of course the first thing he said was "I'm not going to get swine flu". I guess that means I can't convince him.

This flu is way too close for comfort for me. It's down in NYC which is only about 3 1/2 hours from here. This is scary, but I don't think there is much we can really do except hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

This is comforting knowledge Sannah. I think ? as long as it can be contained . Its that it can be spread by a carrier who doesn't know they are ill thats the concern . I have a friend who could go back into some fears and past behaviors that made thier life unmanageable but is aware of where this could take them. For me I'm the opposite of suds and scrub. And for the first time Ive found myself thinking . maybe having a sample at krogers is not such a good idea. . Or wondering maybe I should wash that piece of fruit or my hands more which may be a good thing. I rarely get sick . its more when Im in a gym with lots of people or in a suana that I do . I think taking precaustions to protect self and others is a good thing. Just not to excess. Patricia Last edited by Auroralso; Apr 30, 2009 at 06:12 AM. |
