Has anyone experienced hatefulness at work just because of who you are? Specifically, after co workers realize that you are on the spectrum.. as if you are some how lesser? Although, most of them have a list of issues that could and should be addressed but never is...

I love my job but I find myself jumping BC people dislike me and I tend to be pushed out or bullied. I work hard, smile, I try to be friendly and I'm very polite. I'm just more introverted than most. I don't behave according to the 'culture' but its not BC I'm autistic its BC I don't believe in adapting for others...which is apparently breaking social rules.

Like, darn, I am who I am and apparently that's some how wrong....

I guess the most frustrating part is that it takes a lot of energy to function normally (having to deal with paranoia and constant aniexty) and people make it nearly impossible just to GI to work and be content.

At my workplace, a supervisor made fun of someone on the spectrum and got slammed for it, as well as a warning. It was definitely not tolerated. I think it depends on the location and the type of people that work there. Fortunately where I work, mental illness is not discriminated against. I'm sorry to hear that you feel people dislike you.

I'm actually a teacher. You'd think teachers would be more educated. Lots of the teachers seem to have a low tolerance for kids on the spectrum. I've heard all sorts of stuff including kids being labeled as 'austism brats' and 'not right in the head'. Its rather sickening and sad.

Good news I found a decent paying job as a coach for kids on the austism specturn. I'm hopeful, with personal knowledge and being able to overcome some things myself, that I'll be a good fit. Perhaps more accepted as well.
I just applied tonight. So we will see...

Grrrrrrrr at work place bullies, especially “professionals” like teachers, that’s so sick and sad

The new job you’ve found sounds promising, I’m wishing you all the best

I've always been bullied & always been easily bullied. I also always assumed it was because I was weird & "dumb" & VERY easily taken advantage of. IOW, the fault was in me, not in the bullies. I know better now, but it doesn't help the feelings of paranoia (remember, it's not paranoia if they really are out to get you) & it's still remarkably easy for "mean people" to take advantage of me. Mostly, at my age, I hope I'm better at choosing whom to hang out with, but when it's a job that's not always an option. I worked at the USPS for years, & despite all the hype they put out about no tolerance for workplace discrimination or abuse, I can't imagine a worse place for someone w/ASD. But, that was that particular small, rural post office. When I first began that job it was at a different office in a different town, & I absolutely loved it there. Worked with great people who had great senses of humor. I doubled over with laughter at least a few times every morning. My mistake was transferring to be closer to home. So... I guess right there, that shows it isn't necessarily the ASD that causes the bullying, but the people who make the decision to be bullies.

I've had a lot of insults in the workplace because I can't socialize. My last job was with the Air Force and it was the worst. I'm glad I quit.

I have not told anyone I have autism. I don’t know if anyone has figured out on their own. I feel like my autism is very noticeable, but that’s just me. My coworkers have said to my face that I act like I don’t have feelings.

It only bothers me when they are obviously rude to my face. But if I don’t know, I don’t care.

At $10 an hour, I try to stay focused on the job and not my coworkers immaturity.

But yeah, if someone at work knows the signs and symptoms, they’ve probably figured me out.

I wish people were more educated. I think a part of these idiots actually think they are some how better. Its nuts. Yeah we are a little different but we are just as human as they are and we are most def not the stigma they pinned us with.

Ek, the sad thing is that they believe we are the less intelligenant ones!!

Dude, we think waaay beyond their level. We just struggle to communicate this. Also, we feel more in depth then they do. I think we are an amazing and beautiful part of tye world. We are so kind that we often get used. We have so much empathy and compassion. We just don't express it well.

This is why I chose my name. I am accused of being in a shell ALL the time. My whole life I've been told to "get out of my shell". I refuse to be spoken to like that anymore as if I'm a turtle waitibg to come out. No imnotaturtle!! My quietness is who I am and shouldn't be looked at as something I need remove myself from. My jumbled words and awkwardness and overly kindness is just who I am. I don't need to come out of a shell. I already am who I am.

But when we are faced with uneducated (I mostly am referring to education on oneself) idiots who are sucked in the world of greed and hate...well...its a never ending battle and sucks.

Yep. First job and my boss who despite being told I had Aspergers bullied me. She did not bully me for having it but she thought I was stupid and made me severely depressed. I went to work asking "gee, I wonder what I'm going to be yelled at for today." She chewed me out in front of my coworkers until I cried. I hate messing up and she never really trained me to do my job, she expected 30 years of experience from someone who wasn't even alive that long and just got their college diploma! She thought I had a learning disability and when I had a panic attack/meltdown in her office she demanded I look at her. She fired me when I came back from vacation. She was one of the worst people I have ever met and my therapist even said that if I told HR I could have taken her to court for harassment. I am slowly getting better with my new job because everyone is more patient and the boss (I still get nervous around him but I actually talk to him!And he hasn't made me feel stupid either) is nicer. Four people left after they canned me and loads of people had issues with her over the years so it wasn't just me. I think she was one of those people who viewed Aspergers as an excuse or a mental illness and that I was defective because of it. I still have confidence issues, but slowly getting better.

I completely understand how you feel. I have a nephew who is autism. I used to work with someone at my previous job who had autism. There were times that my boss had trouble understanding something about my coworker. My previous boss had a habit of bullying people and always disguise it has a joke until one day it had back fired on my boss and he had no idea what had happen. He thought he could take advantage of someone who had autism until he realized he couldn't do the kind of things he did to me with my coworker. I was once ask why I didn't react the way my coworker react even though I have a disability myself. My boss would deliberately knock things down of knock things out of people hands and make fun people regardless of whether or not that person had a disability. But he really made it difficult for the person who has a disability and always tried to laugh it off as a disguise joke. Everyone who was not friend with him hate working with him.

I wish that I had that experience. I never seen that at my previous job of any of the places that I applied to previously.

My nephew has autism. I seen a lot of discrimination with those who had disability. My nephew had been bullied by his therapist, his teacher, his principle because of his disorder. He been threaten plenty of time by those who are suppose to help him. His therapist had him so terrified of the police. It took us a while to get him to trust the police and that was because we had an officer introduced himself and explain that his job was to protect him. I try to educated myself so that I can help him. Going to school was a fight and flight.

My previous job tried to fired me and those good boss all left. I was chewed out because of my hearing impairment disability and treat as if I had a mental disorder or was stupid. My district manager was shock to find out of how well I could perform my job even though I had a disability. I finally quit my job.
