For some therapy is a way out of the confusion and nightmares. I guess it is all relative to your point of view.

Yeah, but what else can you do? I left two therapies bc I couldn't feel comfortable or trust them. It's not easy and you will find like many times you won't be able to open up as much as necessary but it's worthy a try.
I couldn't have accomplished many goals without a professional help.

It is. It's really uncomfortable, but my therapist is really kind and seems to really want to help me. Unfortunately we've only discussed my anxiety issues and she's trying to find me a speech therapist, but she doesn't know anything about my AvPD or any of my other problems which I feel are just as important. It's very hard for me to express my emotions to people I'm not close to because I fear embarrassing myself or saying the wrong thing. I want to tell my therapist more, but it's really hard to get the words out. Maybe some of you can relate. I'm sorry if I went off topic.

I'm not sure that this is my case. I always had a great confidence in doctors and therspists. They used to tell me that I express myself very well and that I progressed very fast. I mean, I see them as different to everyone. I see them as unerstanding and proffessional. I can open to a person whenever (s)he is caring and understanding. I can't cope with inflexible people or people who thinks they know everything.

One of the problems with treating this is that many true AvPD's won't go to therapy or will terminate because they get uncomfortable.

Going to get counselling is incredibly hard! I would have never gone if I felt like I had a choice - but there was a counsellor at the psych appointment and the appointment was then made and then I went and I'm the sort who sticks with something that's like a commitment to me. So I go.
I think my counsellor doesn't always feel like he's doing much for me, but he does know that just GOING to the appointment and talking to him about how I actually feel is by far the scariest thing and that participating is the best thing for me in my opinion.

I used to feel like that, but not anymore. I've recently started group therapy as well and although I was terrified before going the first time I almost look forward to the sessions now.
I do struggle with therapy making me think deeply about things I do..... right now I'm even wondering if something I do because I enjoy it isn't also overcompensating ![]() |

Would anyone disagree that dealing with difficulties in your mental health and life is always hard and often very distressing, but you go to therapy in the hope that despite the pain involved that it will help (and it is perhaps impossible to do it on your own)?
Happily, despite ups and downs, I have found it does help. |

I waited 4 years before making a decision and go to a therapist but i was completely destroyed...actually suicidal thoughts was my turning point that make me decide to go no matter what..my therapist not perfect but it's better than not getting any kind of help

First time I went to therapy was bc I was totally lost and I was on a constant depression, I also was force to go out of home after seven years of isolation bc I had a job. There were only two options: go ahead or go on living the hell.
