Very pissed off.The main course I have issues with I seem to have to keep fighting with.
At the start of the semester I went to meet the course manager with the uni disability officer to ensure I got the accommodations my pdoc recommended. I had a ranting post on this meeting on the board somewhere, but to summarise, I got kicked out of the meeting for being in an emotional state, missed it all, and came out with no accommodations made just suggestions that I fix my own ****. Had a meeting with the person again today as she called me in. She was telling me how I wasn't keeping on track... even though we went over my timeline and i *was on track*. Then she said I wasn't professional enough - not enough happy bounce and crap - um, ****er, depression have you heard of it? You ****ing have, i told you weeks ago! When she'd ask me about why some things took longer to do, I'd attempt to explain how x, y, z symptoms make it a hell of a lot harder for me and she just goes, 'Mind your attitude... put that aside'... EXCUSE ME?! You ask for the answer, now you want to IGNORE the impacts of my bipolar? F*** you. So now she's given me a list of things I need to do weekly and I have to see her every week about them. So, doing more for her, ignoring the advice of my pdoc still. She keeps throwing it back on it being 'my fault' it seems. I acknowledge that I do have a stressful workload, I'm still a full time student with some extra ****. But some of the other stuff, like other courses I gain no stress from them, I love them. And my pdoc says stress isn't really wants making me keep dealing with a few leftover symptoms since being on meds. It is not my fault I feel ****ed up, woman. Her manner is really cutting - maybe it seems so mainly because I'm depressed. I left the meeting crying. I was starting to have suicidal thoughts come back. Lucky a friend found me and cheered me up. Feeling more stable now. F*** her. |

From your side of it that does not sound like terribly well-informed or empathetic disabilities counselor. And/or she has chosen an approach that is not working for you and it is very possible that there isn't a lot you can do about any of that.
My college disabilities co-ordinator was a rockstar but before I found her I was royally screwed by the college mental health care professional I went to for help. Long story short I went to her with specific concerns and goals about medication, she told me I didn't need to be on pills and then SURPRISE two months later I'm in the hospital. My point is that the person who's job it was to help me actually caused me harm. But when I was in crisis the dean of students and the disabilities coordinator came in with guns blazing, which I never expected. I don't know what your college structure is like but you need to find an advocate and it doesn't sound like this person is going to do that for you. And if you can't find the help you are entitled to on campus there is nothing unusual about bringing in written notes from your therapist and/or doctor. |

I'm so sorry to hear what you're going through and wish I could actually help more than just lend an ear.

I would really like to have a "chat" with this lady, and my baseball bat would love to meet her!
![]() As Eloise mentioned, can you find someone above the disability officer and ask for their help? Bring in letters from your pdoc and T and explain what's happened so far. You DESERVE to be treated with respect and have accomodations made if your doctor "prescribes" it. What would this teacher say if a diabetic went into insulin shock and passed out? "Get up and change your attitude"???

Thanks, guys.
I might try speak to a higher up but I don't really have the energy nor do I want to have to deal with this course manager going ape when I do get another party in. Sigh. It just shits me that from the start she was like 'we have this support base - x, y, z that are built into the course'. Umm, excuse me but that support base was developed to help your average sane, healthy student while they get stressed on their assessment not someone like me you ****. >> And she tried to point out to me that if I fail (she keeps going on how I'm failing even though my project work is fine, it's just my professionalism isn't in line with what they want. Not enough get go attitude, whatever) I can't use my condition as a reason as I did bring it up and they 'helped' me. WHAT. **** off. << |

I'm sorry if it's overly judgmental but she sounds like a moron reading out of a protocol handbook. I think it's safe to say you are not working with a very creative problem solver.
I don't understand why she is telling YOU what to do, is her "help" conditional upon you doing the things she wants you to do? And how is she in any position to judge whether you are 'failing' or not? If your therapist thought you were faltering would they ever phrase it the way she does? My college equivalent came in saying "what do you need? and are you getting it right now?" Part of the tuition you pay goes towards having support services. You are a student but you are also a customer and in a very real way not getting what you are paying for. I understand being low on energy. But what effect do you think this woman has on students who don't know as much as you do and don't have outside support? |

I agree with Eloise... is there someone higher up you can go to? This lady sounds like a real moron, I cant believe she would even be put in such a position. Good luck to you!
