Every time I feel better, I find I have gained more weight. This time it is 7 pounds in 3 weeks! I am at my all time high and higher than the highest of my first pregnancy. Five more pounds and I surpass the highest of my second pregnancy.
I have got to get this under control! Physical health or mental health...what a choice! I am well on my way to fulfilling the family curse of heart disease and other obesity related problems. It tempts me to dump my meds, but I don't dare. |

hi, it is a struggle dealing with the weight gain, i have always been slim most my life, but the meds have caused me to steadily put on weight, despite my skippng a meal sometimes, is it water or what? i am guilty of wolfing down snacks at night though, i think after i take the risperdal it makes me hungry, so whats there to do? i benefit from the meds, but damn! doesn't seem fair, huh? maybe your doctor can adjust or add a med that will help? im on adderall and still gain, although a low dose-5mg.- and also concerta and it doesnt help at all, ive heard topomax works for some people, personally im not going to exercise! but i should give it a try, thats what my rhymitologist (sp?) suggested for arthritis, but.... ![]()

It is a hard choice -- mental health or physical health. I think it is possible to have both. I, too, have gained weight since starting meds 5 years ago. I've gained 55 pounds and it isn't going anywhere. I've kind of resigned myself to being heavier, but at the same time, I can do a better job of eating more nutritiously, walking to keep my aerobic health going, etc. I'm realizing that as I get older, my ability to fend off weight gain is lessened; the meds were the straw that broke the camel's back so to speak. I've given myself permission to be heavier, but with that I know I have to work to maintain my physical health. I've taken to buying clothes that fit rather than trying to squeeze myself into clothes that simply don't anymore.
Your pdoc can help you with this by prescribing meds that are less likely to cause weight gain (although I think they all do to some extent and combinations of them even much more so). My pdoc only took me off of one me because of weight (zyprexa). I know in my case I'm going to have to work at keeping my physical health in line. Unfortunately, I'm not terribly motivated at this point, but my intentions are there. |

Please stay on your meds! Maybe try and exercise a little more. Take walks during the day for 30 minutes. That should help keep the weight down.

I will stay on my meds for sure. I am just frustrated by the weight gain. I have a session with a personal trainer set up and I plan to ask her to put me on a plan so that I can weigh in each week with her and make sure that I don't gain any more.
I can't afford to keep replacing my clothes either. |

Which meds are you on? Maybe you could switch some of them to meds that are weight neutral?

Trileptal
Prozac Lithium Abilify I am pretty much off Seroquel, but have it PRN if I have insomnia for several days at a time. I think the Lithium is the culprit, and I told my p-nurse that I would like to stop taking it since I am not at a therapeutic level. She said we will talk about it next time I go. |

Lithium will cause weight gain. Mainly because of it's salt content it will cause you to retain water. So, be sure to drink lots of water so your body doesn't retain as much.

Lithium can definitely cause weight gain. I gained about 30 pounds in a little less than a year when I first was diagnosed and started on Depakote. I have since discontinued it but I was still too overweight. I went to 1 session with a nutritionist which was affordable and not a real committment and I am now 50 pounds lighter with strictly dietary changes. I am on 6 meds right now, one of them being Lithium 1200mg and I have not gained any weight. If I gain or lose a little bit I know how to adjust my diet one way or another to maintain where I'm at. Weight gain is such a problem and it does suck to have to choose between mental and physical health, but you're on the right track with the personal trainer. Maybe the gym where you belong has a nutritionist you could meet with, or maybe you can find one in the community. Remember calories in must be less than calories out to lose weight. Good luck with this... it's such a hassle but you can do it!!!

Have you ever tried lamictal? It's often used instead of Lithium and it is not a weight gainer. |

I was allergic to lamictal. Yay me.
Abilify really puts weight on people? I thought it was the least of the atypical ap's to put weight on people. |

Yes, I thought that Abilify was weight neutral as well. But I used to belong to another site and so many people gained weight on Abilify even though it didn't make eat more.
