I was on citalopram. I weaned myself, rightly or wrongly. I now feel fully everything. (Not a nice feeling sometimes!)
I too feel I am bi-polar... Trouble is, I worry it seems the "buzz-word" at the moment..
Isn't it still the old school of lithium for bi-polar? Hope you feel better soon x

widgets; without a mood stabilizer taking the citalopram isn't a good idea. Prior to my diagnosis I was put on an anti-d and 3 weeks later I was in the hospital. The anti-d did nothing to lift the depression and just put me into a mixed state (depression and mania at the same time).

I hope you get to see a Psychiatrist soon and if you can't get in shortly speak to your GP again about what you can do in the meantime.

I second Blue October - Citalopram in its own had me up and down; all over the place. For some people that are bipolar, it pushes them into mania without a mood stabiliser.
Check with your GP and get a proper dx ASAP.

I was on citalopram and it put my moods all over the place, but now they have taken me off it and am very depressed. It is a very long term action so no point just taking a few.
trust your gp and hang on in there for psych.
i can relate and it is really frustrating waiting. hope you are ok widget

I tried Citalopram recently. I had been on a mood stabiliser for several weeks. Within 1 day I was feeling really great. The next day I was hypomanic and agitated. According to my pdoc, the Citalopram had switched me. My mood stabilisers had not reached "therapeutic levels" according to that reaction. This is my 2nd recent switch reaction to SSRIs, and my pdoc wants me to avoid antidepressants, and to treat the depression with other mood stabilisers and atypical antipsychotics that have an antidepressant effect. So far so good (more or less).

Tsunami - what antipsychotics have anti-depressant qualities? I cannot take citalopram as it kills my Libido.
In South Africa we have a VERY different anti-dep, called Edronax. It seemed to work for me, but then the dosage needed to be increased, which we didn't get around to. It's also good for energy, but can cause anxiety.
Then my pdoc wants to try my on Wellbutrin. I'm mentioning these, as they are all not SSRI's.

.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amisulpride marketed in South Africa as Solian.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sulpiride marketed in South Africa as Eglonyl.

Solian hasn't hit my libido as hard as Cipramil or Prozac did.

Lamotrigine (antiepileptic) is thought to have a mild antidepressant effect, and be useful for the maintenance treatment of bipolar. I have seen some articles disputing this.

Lamotrigine - I'm on 100mg and it's doing nothing for me (I don't really suffer from hypomani, just maybe 1 day every 2 weeks) - the depression has argueably gotten worse.
I've tried Sulpiride - I think it helped me.
