hey there,
so my son (whos 20) and i went to the new med doctor today..my son has been "ok" the last couple of weeks...after talking to the doc for an hour he told me my son is delusional and pshycotic..and switched his meds from risperdone and tegratol to seroquel...he thinks my son his unpredictable due to the things that have happened in the past ie. angry outbursts, delusions, my son told him that in the past he has thought people could read his thoughts...my son has been "ok" at home the last few weeks, even happy the last few days, but once in the doctors office he changed...any thought on why that was or if that has happened to anyone? i asked my son and he doesnt seem to think he was different. but he def was..now that we are at home hes seems fine again.(hes recently dx bipolar btw after a severe manic episode)thanks for listening, this website has really helped me and for that i a greatful.. |

Hey Hope1234,
Nice to see you again ![]() My thinking is that he has maybe masked his true thoughts/feelings so not to worry you. I am only saying that as that is what I do. I can get delusional at times too and will hide it so not to worry anyone etc |

What I would say is....Just see how he is doing on the Seroquel. Sometimes from responses to the treatment you can get a better idea of what the problem is - it is really hard to communicate even what exactly are the symptoms you're having, or at least I find it hard, so I keep quiet, until somehow I see what's happening for what it is and I say it.
I wish the best for your son and you ![]() |

seroquel is also used for BP so it doesn't much matter that they are not sure of the diagnosis, hopefully with time it will become more clear. Problem with seroquel is that it does make you dopey when you start taking it, it gets better with time.
All the best for you and your son

My son is using Seroquel as an adjunct to his anti-depressant. He responded to it very well. He is using the old one, not the extended release, and it helps calm him down to sleep. At first he was very groggy during the day, but that went away rather quickly.

Can't Stop Crying,
I am the same I use the Serequol and the Depakote together to calm me and the Serequol is really mainly used to calm me down for bed. I was the same as your Son very groogy but it soon wears off. I take 25mg at lunch time and 50mg at night time. |

Thanks everyone for your responses. My son hasnt started the seroquel yet. Hes refusing. He says what hes taking now (risperdone and tegratol) is working so he doesnt want to change it. He has been responding well, but I am no professional. I don't know what to do... Like I said earlier, he has been happy the last 4 or 5 days.with a very positive attitude..I am going to call the doc today and see what he says.... My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you...I know you all are going through alot and you have still took the time to give me advice...

I too am a mom of a son 26y/o with bp. It is difficult when first diagnosed to see the real signs but over time you will be able to better predict when things are not right with your son. Most important I have found is to not be afraid to question drs. and be comfortable (both of you) with the dr. Looking back I could kick myself for sticking with psys that were not really listening to my son. Keep in mind these drugs also need time to kick in to see if they are really working. good luck with getting him the right cocktail of meds to help.
