I really can't speak for myself, but:
For 9 months I was married to a man who was bipolar and refused to see a pdoc. He medicated himself with coffee - about 20 cups a day.
In 9 months I think I saw him depressed once for a couple of days. The rest of the time he was manic.

wow, 20 cups of coffee a day would send me into a mania like *that*!

I've had some severe, long lasting manias, and was never depressed except post-partum.I've stayed on meds so I can't attest to whether thats still the case.

I drink a ton of coffee, I know it's bad for me but I love my coffee, although it doesn't seem to effect me like that. I get plenty of depression and mania, and then I seem to get lovely mixed episode at least a few times a year.

I did read tho that males with Bipolar 1 can be more prone to the mania side than depression, females more prone to the depression side. I am guessing that would have something to do with hormones and maybe social/family pressures. I am sure females can experience this as well tho.

I think it really just depends on the individual, Bipolar is so individual and effects us all differently. I read all the time how mania is so fun, euphoric, and people love it. For me mania in the first phase is great, however it quickly becomes so severe is feels more like a nightmare, too fast, too agitated, too confused, too low functioning and then psychosis rears its ugly head, not exactly fun.

I do get mania just as much as I go to depression.

My manic episodes wayyyyyyy out-number my depressed phase.... or sometimes they feel like they're kind of mixed. I went through a depressed phase a few months ago, but I don't even remember the one before that. I had med added (Lexapro) and it went away. Hopefully, that's the last one I'll experience fo a long time.
