Hello,

This is my first post to this forum. Right now I am extremely angry. I just got back from my first appointment with my new psychiatrist. I have been on three medications to treat my Bipolar disorder for several years and they work extremely well for me.

After taking my history she said "you don't need to be on all this stuff." One of the meds I take is Lamictal 350mg QD. She said "I'm going to cut that in half." I also take Klonopin for a severe anxiety disorder, 2mg BID. She said I not going to prescribe that for you any more. She said you'll have to taper off. I said that takes a long time and besides I don't have any refills so there would not be enough to taper off. Well, she said " you'll just have to tough it out." "If things get bad just go to a hospital."

Gee, thanks Doc!!!

On that note I said to her "in that case I think I'll go out and treat myself to a couple of beers" and walked out.

Can you see a different Pdoc? I know Klonopin for sure has serious withdrawal symptoms (hallucinations, delusions, chills, sweats, headaches, insomnia, etc). Doesn't sound like this Pdoc is very reasonable, you would need to be on a taper program for probably over a month to get off off 2mg two times a day and that's just the Klonopin. Sorry you were treated like this. If you ever do have to go to the ER in withdrawal make sure you give them that Pdocs name.....

dijmart summed it all up. Get a new pdoc pronto. If you end up at the ER before you can get a refill on Klonopin, be sure the ER staff get your current pdoc's name. In fact note it in your paper work as well.

Wow, she's the kind the term "crazy mean" was designed for.

Really sorry you're having to go thru this. Hope you can get an appt fast. Have you get any teaching hospitals close by?

Wow! I would definitely be angry at that Pdoc! OMG! She doesn't know what she is doing to you and I would agree that getting another Pdoc is in order.

Definitely find someone else. Benzo withdrawal is nothing to scoff at and she should know that.

That is what I am feeling today. I am angry at my psychiatrist. He put me on this terrible stuff -Doxepin. I am barely functional today and couldn't drive straight in a lane today. How dare he amanipulate me like this. no more meds. I'm going off everything. I feel resentment at having to cow tow to these doctors and therapists. waste of time and copays. end of story

Violinm9 (((( HUGS)))

So sorry to read you were treated so poorly .. I can also understand wanting to just quit the whole mess ...But that said ... Just stopping benzios cold turkey is definatly not something you want to go thru .. as Dijmart said above the withdrawl symptoms are horrid .

Please make calls and find a new pdoc that will understand that even if they would like to see you try to come off a certain med they will taper you down off them so you wont crash and burn.

Wish you luck in finding a more caring and professional doctor .

Not wise. I would seriously rethink this decision. I know you're mad and upset but you'll only be hurting yourself. You will be the one with the chills, sweats, delusions and/or hallucinations scared out of your mind. Just make an appt with another Pdoc or go to the ER for help with a taper program or your family doc, anything would be better then the Pdoc you did get to see.
Hang in there, call a hotline for advice, if needed.

That doctor you dealt with sounds like a real control freak. I'm really surprised she did that to you. It just sounds very irresponsible to allow someone to go off psych meds cold turkey. If you end up hurting someone or yourself, such as getting into a car accident, and it can be proven that your lack of meds was a contributing factor (not a stretch by any means) I don't see why she would not be at least partly liable. Sure, doctors have liability insurance for exactly these kinds of situations, but I'd definitely file a suit and make her premiums go sky high. She sounds like a nightmare. I bet she drives an obnoxious car w/ some totally stupid vanity plate.

Run like hell. I think even a primary care doc would be better than this quack.

I agree about changing docs. Just because it's a doc or T doesn't mean it's the right one for you. Just like finding the right Rx, we also have to find the right doc.
