I don't think one causes another but I know that living in constant pain can aggravate moods. Be that irritable, depressed, angry or whatever.

I used to go to a pain center because I have RSD, and then developed other nerve problems.

My 1st doctor told me that most of her patients are BP. I have no idea if it is connected or a coincidence.

Personally ,,,2 years ago I was finally diagnosed with Fibromyalgia after years of unexplained pain 20+ years .. I did fall into a severe depresssion which my doctor says is typical of chronic pain. Earlier this year I was diagnosed with bipolar ,, looking back I have had bipolar my whole life .. But Chronic pain can make I feel can make bipolar " worse"

Good Luck Hope your feeling better soon

Hi, there. I suffer from fibromyalgia and bipolar and have been suffering from both disorders for a numbers of years. I can't specifically say that they're linked, but I do know an awful lot of bipolar sufferers who have fibromyalgia as well. So I'm beginning to suspect a trend. Yes, fibromyalgia is very painful. I get an all-over fluey feeling and then start to throb painfully in certain spots in my body. Also, if I'm bumped on the buttocks or arm or chest by anything, it hurts like heck! I have noticed over the years that stress and lack of sleep will make both my fibromyalgia and my bipolar disorder worse, so you may want to look at things from that perspective. If I can be of any further help, you know where to reach me. Right here. Best of luck with both conditions, because they can both be crippling, but they can also both be managed.

Hi! Glad to know I'm not alone, but sorry you're struggling w/this, too. Was dx'd w/depression in the early '90s; fibromyalgia late '90s; then bi-polar II early 2000. Have always wondered if there's a connection and/or if the meds for one can trigger the other? I agree that the emotional pain and physical pain sure don't help each other!! I'm just taking it one step at a time and trying to be nice to myself...don't know why that's so hard to do. Glad you are all here

I just started taking meds for my BP and I am having strange aches and pains that come from nowhere. Sometimes the pain is pretty sharp, but it goes away. I am going pay attention to it though. It is only a couple of times a day right now. I would like to keep it that way.

I wonder if it's the meds- particularly lithium.

I have chronic joint pain, chronic clustering headaches, and chronic digestive problems. I've been tested for everything from fibro, arthritis, ANA tests, colonoscopy, cerebral angiogram, celiac, vitamin deficiancies, chrones. I can't even remember all of the tests. My dr told me if I came back with any more perfect results I'd be bionic. They did find abnormal cells in my intestines leading then to beleive I had chrones, only I do not fit the symptoms. It's extremely frustrating. The list of symptoms I have is extremely long including photo sensitivity with a rash that appears as a blisters almost looking like measles from sun exposure.

I wish I had some answers as all my symptoms run in cycles. Bipolar related, I dunno. Interesting that also runs in cycles.

Hi there, BP and fibro are not connected. A lot of fibro people, like myself, have a tramatic event that can bring on fibro. I also have chronic pain disorder/syndrome. It usually comeswith the fibro. I am not BP but my son of 18 is and he only complains of sleep issues. Aswell as his meds make him sleepy/tired but not enough to help him sleep.

Home this helps.

My husband was diagnosed with RSD (reflex sympathetic dystrophy) in 1985. His bipolar diagnosis didn't come until about 5 years ago. It doesn't seem like one caused the other, but they do aggravate each other. If his pain in worse, he has more problems coping emotionally and mentally, and vice versa. The pain syndrome also comes with high blood pressure and diabetes which both aggravate the bipolar if they aren't managed well.

Don't know about anyone else but some episodes of bp can be very traumatic!!

Seriously though, I feel there's a lot of crossover between physical and mental/emotional. Mind body spirit.
