I took it for several years. It worked very well for me. I didn't seem to have any side effects. In fact, if it were up to me, I'd still be on it! Unfortunately, I developed a serotonin drug allergy and had to go off. As far as I'm concerned, I was at my best while on it.

I was on it, the low dose was fine, but the higher dose almost sent me to the hospital with psychosis. I'm sure it's not a normal reaction to the medication, best of luck.

I'm on it now and have been taking it for a few years. I haven had pretty good luck with it, I've just had to up the dose over the last year or so to get the same effect and AD properties. I started at 20mg and have slowly worked up to 80mg just recently. I have little to no side effects and have lost weight on it. It tends to make me a little tired, but that's it. One thing that is nice about Prozac is that if you need to stop taking it, there are really no withdrawal symptoms, as it has a long half life and leaves the body gradually. This is also a good thing in terms of what happens if you miss a dose - nothing bad happens when you miss, unlike most other meds. Hope this helps.

I take 10 mg Prozac once daily (in the A.M.early). In addition, I take a "food medication" called Deplin (which is a form of folate which can cross the blood-brain barrier and serves to nourish brain cells in people who don't have sufficient enzymes to metabolize folic acid into folate and prevents the folate from being available to the brain.)

For more information on it, a website called Deplin.com may give us additional helpful advice about its use. I wouldn't be without it. It keeps me relaxed and (usually) very calm, and since it's a food product, there are no side effects as there are in medications for calmness.

Prozac gave me some of the worst psychosis I've ever had. It was the first psych med I was put on when I was 17. Without a mood stabilizer mind you. But even with mood stabilizers I cannot tollerate antidepressants with becoming manic or mixed and psychosis.

Hopefully prozac will work out well for you and you won't have too much troubles.

My husband took Prozac for a while and lost 30 lbs. He also got really grouchy and angry, so I asked him to go off it because he scared me. However, he was delighted with the weight loss, so I ran to our doctor and asked for some too.

I GAINED 30 lbs. Then I really was depressed!!

Was on it for nearly 2yrs. Initially it was a bit sedating, but that wore off. I was on 20mg daily, but upped to 40mg during depressive episodes. I didn't have any side effects.

I was on it for 10 years. It finally lost its effectiveness but it worked well for me. It was the first time I felt happy. I always thought everyone felt as bad as I until prozac. Now I am on Effexor XR which also works !!

I had no side effects with prozac that I know of. It might have caused some weight gain but maybe I would have gained it anyway

I was on it for a couple of years. It worked well for a while and then it no longer worked anymore. For depression, I currently take wellbutrin and zoloft along with lamictal. I'm still looking for the right cocktail.

Has anyone had success with Prozac, but have had to keep upping the dosage for it to be effective? I've had to gradually take a higher dose over the course of about 18 - 24 months since I began taking it. It seems like every 5 months or so I've had to go up (20mg to 40mg to 60mg and now at 80mg) for it to be effective. It does seem to work with minimal side effects, but my concern is that it is going to stop working well enough to the point where the maximum recommended dose would have to be surpassed. Thanks.

That's what they call "Prozac Poop-Out". It's very common with us---we start an AD, it works for a while, then we have to keep going up on the dose over time until we max out. That's when it's time to change meds.

Best of luck!

Hi, BiolaRNurse - thanks! I have heard of that happening to people, I just didn't realize it was so common. I'm dreading the day that happens because I had a hard time finding an AD that worked with minimal side effects - Prozac does that for me. Oh well. At least I can prepare myself for that since it seems that's what going on here.
