I haven't been able to find a job and won't be able to now I'm in my last trimester and all the things I volunteer for are still on summer holidays so I'm bored and sick of being on my own. Any ideas? I'm just venting....

I actually have no ideas, but couldn't let your post go unanswered...

I know how you feel, not having anything productive to do Do you belong to a church? They might be able to keep you busy...

Are there any new mom/mom to be clubs in your area? I never joined one due to my tendancy to isolate, but I hear they can be great for new moms so they are not at home all day. Plus you have a chance to make other mom friends, which is kind of important. I have a co-worker friend with three boys, she's my age and her boys are the same as my two older boys, and so we vent about our kids together.

Thanks for your replys. I'm in a church but its summer holiday so all the activities are stopped. Thankfully they start back soon so I only have a bit more mindnumbing Borden to go. Mums clubs around here start after birth but I'm sure that will help then. I used to read lots but don't seem to have the concentration for it at the moment.

Have you ever tried art therapy. It can do wonders. Even if you just buy some paint and a brush and just play with the colors. Maybe you could learn another craft like making jewerly or something. I find art to be therapeutic. It is a big part of my therapy to help with depression.

I love making jewelry but this is an expensive hobby - just a warning. Although Kindachaotic suggested that Ebay has good beads and nickel-free findings. I just have not checked yet.

Do you like cats? I think you can volunteer as a kitten socializer - you will be good at that. It is very rewarding. The right thing for a pregnant mom.

Many great ideas. You could be restless from pregnancy, but remember you won't be alone soon! And youre actually not alone now, you just haven't met him/her who is in there yet. Have you ever tried crocheting? I taught myself how while I was pregnant with daughter, made her some very cute baby booties and bibs and things. And once you have baby, especially if youre nursing, you will get all these hormones release that give you wonderful spaced out baby bonding time.

Great ideas, thanks - might try learning to crochet. It looks hard though.
I have made jewlery before but it does easily get expensive.
Had a good day today - met up with two friends.

I am so glad you visited with friends! I think crochet will be easier than you think, and it's very low cost. You just need to learn the basic stitch and the rest expand on it and make sense. You can also print out easy beginner patterns like a baby bib or hat. I got really good at it, made and sold some rasta type hats, made super colorful baby hats out of embroidery thread. I miss it. It was relaxing but creative.

When I was dirt poor with 2 babies at age 22, I found a big bag of many yarns at the playground, along with a few crochet hooks. I thought it was a miracle. I kept coming back to playground to try to find owner, but never did, so I made some nice things from it.

I looked online and found some websites with the basic stitch on it. Might get se wool and a crotchet hook tomorrow. I'm not very good at knitting but I'll give this a go. At least it's cheap!

HI BP,

Is there a college where you can audit classes? Volunteering is great - maybe in the pediatric ward of a hospital, read "What to expect when you're expecting", A great website for homemade non-toxic, safe cleaning & beauty products is The Dollar Stretcher bc you don't need to be inhaling bleach etc. I have heard pregnancy can make to hard to concentrate on a book though. Have you decorated the nursery?

Good Luck,

TnT

A sourcing idea just came to mind in reading this. I don't know whether you live in a populated area or not, but you might consider checking craigslist and such for yarn. In categories of goods that people tend to get "overstocked" on, craft supplies is WAY up there. People take on hobbies all the time, get all kinds of supplies, then interest fades, or a new hobby comes along (and we BPers are of course are completely unfamiliar with this phenomenon! <cough> <cough cough hack! cough cough>) Where was I?

Oh! I know that yarn can be kind of pricey, because my sister knits (you know, complicated patterns and everything -- and scarcely needs to even look at it while she's doing it(!!!) I cannot fathom this.), so I've been to some shops. It's hard not to be drawn to the super-yummy ones (I think they might have some kind of magnetic gizmo tucked in there ). Heck, I get drawn to them and can't knit at all(!) (Reference: xmas 2005, in which an intended gift hat remained in the form of a paper bag full of expensive yarn. Considerably more than a hats-worth. And yes, someone did get it. For free!). Especially as you are starting out, working with such a bargain helps keeps fun high and perceived pressure low.

In an area I do know....metalsmiths begin by gaining their chops working in copper and brass. There's a reason they don't start out on silver and gold. Among other things, the "stakes" create an immobilizing intimidation that is not conducive to fun or learning or the creative process. In total contrast -- working with something gleaned from the metals recycling place -- one can experiment with abandon. And THAT'S FUN!

(Not saying you would be silly like me. Set out to relay the sourcing, value and fun of a bargain. Then got carried away... Ooops.)
Thanks for this!
