So, I did go to the doctor today and I was right to go. I'm really sick. Probably just bacterial bronchitis and an ear infection for sure, but she was also thinking it could be mono, so we're checking that out. I got checked for pneumonia too. I doubt it's either of those, but I'm on an antibiotic now, so hopefully I'll be better.

But, she said that I needed to miss work and school for the rest of the week. And I called my boss and told her.

For those who know, she claims I have missed more than I actually have. Rather, she said I called in for those, when I just did what she said was okay for 4 out of the 6 times. She told me today, that calling in is when she has to find someone herself. So, if my boss is using that logic, I have not called in 6 times. I have only called in 2 times. And I can't argue that with my boss, because I'll get in trouble!

Well, I'm really pissed, because I have a doctor's note this time, saying I have to miss and my boss said that if I don't find someone myself to cover the shifts, I am going to be in trouble.

First of all, she never explained to me the call in process. That is not something I should have to ask myself. Secondly, a doctor is saying I should not go to work and school, because I am really sick and really contagious. I work in a nursing home. I'm supposed to go in super sick. Does this make any sense to you? My boss cares more about having shifts covered than the health of the residents.

So, I'm just really, really, really pissed right now, because this is absolutely ridiculous. I at least more than likely have these two shifts covered. Thankfully. But I feel like I should look for a new job....

This where the union might be helpful. If you have a union they have shop stewards that are there for you, call them right away and let them know the situation. You have workers rights.. I had a manager who was the same way and she caused me grief. I had Doctor's notes and the required paperwork but she thought of other angles to get me into trouble with her bosses My union made her back off and she did.. I'm sorry you are having to deal with this on top of being sick. I hope you feel better.
warm thoughts to you.

I don't think there is a union... It's a nursing home. I really don't know. But I need to figure out what to do, because this isn't right. On top of it, the whole time I was talking to her, she was being really rude to me about it. Like it was my fault. I didn't ask to be sick.

Anyways, thank you! I will see what I can do.

I am totally thinking about it. I just went over the handbook, which are the rules that are in place and to be followed, and none of what she is saying is in there. In fact, my doctor's note here, is counted as one absence, according to the rules in place. Even if I am missing 2 days of work.

So I'm going to let my boss know. I'm not happy about this.

Sorry , This is typical nursing home practices. I know, first hand. There is no way to change the way things are done there.. just find a new job.

I am glad you went to the Doctor. Sorry you weren't able to go sooner.

Rest up and load up on fluids.

Feel better

I am going to try and find a new job. This is just ridiculous. Especially because all their rules are in the book and this is NOWHERE to be found.

And thank you! She's tested me for all kinds of stuff, we'll find out soon, I hope.

Thanks.

I'm sorry this is happening, and worse when you're so sick! I'd clarify with her once and for all exactly what her call-in policy is to avoid future misunderstandings. For what it's worth, it doesn't sound like she wants you to come in sick, it sounds like she wants you to find replacements (if I'm understanding this right, in the sense that if you can't find people I don't think she would force you to work with a doctor's note and working in a nursing home).

I work in a hospital and the weekend people are often asked to find replacements if it's last minute -usually amongst the other weekend people, just because it's so hard to find people. Covering shifts is such an issue in healthcare, I don't think any other job is like that.

Does she usually get temps from an agency? Does she always ask employees to find their own replacements? I'd check with other employees and see if she's doing this consistently.

Hope you feel better soon and best of luck working things out with your boss!

Really? Wow! I get 8 hours of Earned Time taken out for each day I'm out, no matter what (unless it's over three days and then it starts to come out of Extended Sick Leave). Or is the meaning of 'absence' separate from the Earned Time taken out?

ultra - I am going to make sure with her soon and let her know I didn't understand. I'm not going to blame her (even though it is her fault for not telling me. I could have asked, and I tried before, but she just told me the same thing without being direct).

And we get earned time off too, but I don't really know what its used for.

But thank you! I think I might have it covered, I'm hoping!

I got my shifts covered, thankfully! And I actually feel a bit better today, with the antibiotic kicking in. And I got my test results back, I at least don't have mono or pneumonia. So I'm hoping for a speedy recovery now!
