Has anyone had trouble with abilify making them more sensitive to caffine? I just upped dose to 10mg today and had a cup of coffee. Don't think I've even been this jittery. Caffiene doesn't normally do this to me.

I had a bad reaction to Abilify - jittery, pacing, irritable, couldn't keep legs still, couldn't lay down, more sui thoughts than ever. I possibly may have been drinking coffee at the time. But it just wasn't for me, pdoc took me off it right away, went on lithium which helped for awhile.

I didn't see anything on Abilify's website about caffeine per say but it does say that one of the most common side effects with adults is restlessness. Specifically: "an inner sense of restlessness or need to move (akathisia), anxiety, insomnia, and restlessness..."

I can only imagine that caffeine would only increase this especially if you've just increased your dose.

OMG that is exactly what I am dealing with!!! I had no idea it was a side effect of abilify. I guess I have to call my pdoc.

I don't drink caffeine specifically because of the anxiety and intestinal difficulties it gives me. I can only imagine the abilify might react with the caffeine poorly.

does anyone know if leg cramps are a side effect of abilify? I've had then all day.

Check the website they have a checklist of symptoms. I think I saw muscle stiffness on there.

I take Abilify and got akathisia from it. It works well for me so I didn't want to go off of it. We tried reducing it but that wasn't enough so my pdoc put me on propranolol, a beta blocker used for high blood pressure that also stops akathisia. It worked so I am still on Abilify with propranolol. As an extra benefit, propranolol also helps with anxiety.

I'm on a large dose of Abilify. I haven't had any leg cramps, but I do notice that the circulation to my legs is nullified. they fall asleep quickly if I sit in the wrong position. As far as caffeine goes, it may intensify it. Idk. but a caffeine high is what I'm after. I also drink energy drinks during the workday and they make me feel good.

it would affect everyone differently. It works well for me. puts me back into reality and out of my head. lol.

it lets me see the things that I have always missed.

I drink coffee/tea everyday and also take 30mgs of Abilify.I haven't had any problems, however if you go to this site:Drugs.com | Prescription Drug Information, Interactions & Side Effects, it will give you a good idea on the side effects of any or all of the medications you are taking. I have found this to be extremely resourceful.

Hi I'm wondering how abilify is working for you? I just had caffeine because abilify makes me so sleepy and I thought it would help me, but now I feel so antsy and I'm regretting it... Especially I'm still sleepy yet now feeling restless inside ugh! Overall abilify makes me feel stable. Prozac just didn't work for me it only made me sick. While abilify makes me sleepy and not hungry but it does make me feel okay around other people and I actually left my house yesterday it felt good. Until the afternoon I started feeling paranoia. I'm sure my dosage will be increased. I guess stay away from caffeine is the best choice at this point?

Since starting Abilify, I've been as jumpy as a flea on a griddle. I am sure it reacts with the caffeine, because I drink an aggregate of at least 12 cups of coffee a day. Some might think that much alone would be enough to give one the jitters, but I've been soaking it up like that for decades, and could still take afternoon naps on the weekends. I can't concentrate, I forget things easily, and I've the attention span of a hyperactive child. I DO like the loss of appetite, as my ponderous girth is becoming a liability. I DO like that I want to go out more and interact with people. But I'm laying off it til I see my doctor 6 days from now, and going back to my old regime. I'd rather be sleepy than jumpy and only sleeping 10 hours in 2 days.

I am starting abilify again at 10 mg while also going off seroquel. I was told to take the medication at night (when first prescribed about a year ago) so mixing it with caffeine during the day makes me wonder if i should take this during the morning and not night.
I am new here thanks for the info.

Seroquel has helped a friend sleep at night when they could not. When they stopped that the doc put them on abilify to help them sleep.

Perhaps talking with your doc about that medicine and when it will help you the most at the time to be taken would lessen your concerns.

I have noticed a correlation between my Abilify, how much caffeine I consume and anxiety. My tdoc wants me off the caffeine. When I get anxious I just remind myself what's happening. I won't totally give up all caffeine. Best wishes.

It's interesting how we all have different experiences to meds. Abilify worked well for me for awhile but them it caused extreme light headedness and I fainted twice, nearly killing myself and my poor little dog who I was holding during one collapse. I guess it lowered my resting heart rate which means for me it reduced anxiety.....I also became more social with the wrong kinds of people so perhaps hypomanic but not in a nervous sense. I gave up caffeine for years because I was told it would help my stomach pain....it didn't. I can "usually" drink a ton of caffeine and still sleep but sometimes I can't. Wellbutrin and caffeine is a bad combo for me. Report any noticeable side effects to your doctors as you never know what may be extremely important for them to know.

I think you should try ditching caffeine altogether. It's a powerful drug that one of my more health-conscious pdocs once described as a "poison". Coffee is everywhere in society, but that doesn't mean it's right for someone in your circumstances. I jacked myself out of a 9-month depression with a flood dose of caffeine which resulted in a short and annoying bout of hypomania and haven't taken caffeine since. Cannabis is also something that you can probably do without. I'm not a doctor; I just have 25 years of experience as a crazy person.
