HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
What a ****ing joke that stuff is. If anyone else is having success with a melatonin regimen... I envy you... legit. I was hoping to get away from the Tylonol PM or the Nyquil or ANY of the OTC sleep aids I've tried. After 15 years of that though, my body seems to rebel against "all-natural". I'm sorry... I'm just bitter. I'm done now.

Melatonin doesn't knock you out, its not a "sleep aid" in the traditional sense. All it can and should do is open the sleep window for you. If it failed to do so, or you didn't recognize the window and waited for it to actually put you to sleep, then that must suck and feel like a collossal waste of time, but honestly everyone complains because they expect to be knocked the fk out, and thats not its function, not in the least...
Melatonin is our body's sleepytime hormone that gets released when we're tired. When we have insomnia, there's no sleepytime message being receved from our brains. So all this supplement "can" ever do, is send a sleeptyime message. Meaning? Well if you yawn or feel even a bit relaxed after taking it, jump in bed and switch off the light. Its sole function is to send that sleepytime message, what we do with the message is up to us. |

I'm sensitive to all sleep aids and antihistamines all of them knock me out. So Melatonin works for me but anti anxiety meds knock me out to unless I'm (hypo)manic. It's often when I'm not well my husband will "drug me" in hopes I'll be better when I wake this is particularly helpful to keep me out of the hospital when I'm psychotic.

Yup. Did nothing for me. Benadryl works for a couple days, until I find mydelf needing to take like 10 just to feel drowsy.
It's a pretty low dose, but my seroquel knocks me right the eff out. I've only been on it for about three months so we'll see if the trade off for good sleep is getting fat. Oh well. |

Local time: 3:30am.
TICK TOCK, SLEEP! TICK TOCK! I have an app on my Kindle that plays white noise and it usually helps a little. But! Since going to bed at midnight I've been up at 1am and then again at 2:30 and have been up since. The dog kicked me out of bed (I'm sure most people could sleep through it... but ooooh noooo... not me!) so now I'm on the couch. I bring my Kindle with me... try to turn it on... and get "battery is too low to turn on". Oh noooo! Whhhhhhyyyyyyy! Oh sleep, you are a cold hard mistress. Now I do have to say that some nights I do sleep a little better since taking it. But for the hard type of insomnia it doesn't seem to help very much. Also unfortunately, by the time I realize that it hasn't done very much (i.e. 3:30am) its too late to take anything else without feeling like crap the next day.

Melatonin, no thanks. But Tryptophan, now that is worth a try. It actually worked/works pretty well...

Tryptophan is a great idea. I will have to try that... didn't consider it. Is that sold in pill/concentrated form? I've never heard of it outside of milk or turkey. (Call me ignorant.)
Three hours of sleep later... I'm work. Come on Monday. Let's dance you and I.

Melatonin (over-the-counter) works for a maximum of only three months.
I have an antihistamine prescribed called Zyxal (5 mg when needed)that helps with sleep very much. You're better off to try 5htp Tryptophan for sleep than Tryptophan. (Tryptophan can't cross the blood-brain barrier, but 5htpTryptophan can.) |

Well, that explains why I'm taking it and it doesn't work. Nothing really does as far as falling asleep is concerned, although I usually sleep pretty well once I get there. My sister takes 35 mg/night and it doesn't do her a bit of good..... I don't want to take even more pills since I already have 10 at bedtime as it is.

Beware of 5htp! It sent me straight manic. It worked for one or 2 nights then I ramped up to the moon. It is a precursor to seretonin and can have anti-depressant effects. If you are not on a mood stabilizer or sensitive AT ALL to antidepressants...beware! If I even look at Prozac or Paxil I go manic, same with 5htp.
