The catch all word use to be - CODEPENDENT

How about MENTAL

Then the good old standard CRAZY or BASKET CASE

Have you noticed the last few years whenever someone does something wrong the first thing someone says is "I think they are BIPOLAR." Is BIPOLAR the new buzz word and catch all phrase?

No one says a person is overwhelmed from the stress caused by their divorce, now they just say the person has GONE BIPOLAR. Is this like someone going POSTAL?

Lets all come up with a new catch all phrase when someone is going through a rough time. I like a few of the following:

EDS - Emotionally Depleted Syndrome
EDS - EI-1 Emotionally Depleted Syndorme Employment Induced 1
EDS - XH-1 Emontionally Depleted Syndrome "X" Husband

What do you think? Should they add this to DSM? What would you like to add? This was kind of fun.

SD - Stupid Disorder coined by a friend
SIIS - Sanity Induced Ignorance Syndrome (very similar to SD, but the afflicted person retains some cognitive function. Always caused by excessive sanity)
MD - Materialist Disorder (afflicted persons have very specific psychotic delusions regarding the importance of wealth and social status. Administer philosophy or Buddhism in small doses for as long as necessary)
RATS - Religious Anti-Theist Syndrome (Wait, that's me )

Fortunately, I haven't heard it used like that. But if I get caught in one of those moods, I might just have to let them know what it really means to be bipolar.

TVS - TV Syndrome. Where people think their lives should be similar to those lives that see in TV!

With adults, it's bipolar; with kids, its ADD/ADHD. The slightest bit of erratic behavior apparently means you have a disorder, these days.

I agree, that "bipolar" does get thrown around a lot by people who have no idea what it actually means. It is becoming the new "postal" or whatever else.

How about....

KIAD - Know-It All Disorder: for those who can't help but tell you why you're wrong and know absolutely nothing about yourself or how the world works.

IPSS - Implusive Propaganda Spreading Syndrome: for those wonderful people who can't help but send you every untrue e-mail that comes to them, despite knowing it's full of hate and lies, and acting shocked when you pull up the truth on Snopes.

I needed a good laugh today...so this fills the bill!

MPGOOE- Mobile Phone Growing Out Of Ear syndrome...this person thinks they are so important that they should continue to talk to someone on the mobile phone while ordering coffee. They also tend to talk LOUDLY on the mobile phone in book stores and libraries.
CNC- Chronic Negative Commentator...these people can be found at little league games around the nation, as well as any other public venue. They seem to think THEIR child does nothing wrong but everyone else's has issues that they must point out.

How about SIASDS---Stupid Is As Stupid Does Syndrome
CRS---Can't Remember Squat
GOK---God Only Knows
SOBS---Sick Of Bipolar Symptoms

Seriously, though, I absolutely hate it when people throw around the term 'bipolar' to describe the weather, a b!tchy co-worker, or just a moody person. I try not to take offense because I know they're not thinking of it as an insult to REAL bipolar people, but it is thoughtless and demeaning.

I totally needed this today. Thank you!!

They were talking about a nurse today at work and saying they thought she was "bipolar". I had had it so I made sure everyone knew she was SPOILED not bipolar. I told everyone I was sick of people using that catchword for people who don't want to do their work!!

I told everyone how there are plenty of people who work everyday w/ bipolar successfully on meds!! Stop using the term so loosely and call them what it is, SPOILED, DEMANDING, and STUBBORN!!
NOT BIPOLAR!!!

Geesh!!!!

It's a lot like 'depressed' was/is a catch all word. I remember seeing so many people saying they're depressed like its just an emotion; a replacement for simply saying they're sad, when in reality depression is a mental illness which (like bipolar disorder) can't be diagnosed without seeing a doctor.

The word 'bipolar' is now on a similar level - the word is being thrown about like its nothing, and the knowledge of the true severity of the illness isn't increasing as much as the popularity of the word.

I don't mind depressed being used, though I'd agree it is overused. The dx of major depressive disorder requires more than a depressed mood and the mood and other symptoms must last for two weeks, but you can have a depressed mood without having a dx.

I do agree with what you're saying, though I do personally believe that the overuse of the word 'depressed' takes away the knowledge of the severity of Major Depressive Disorder as a mental illness in itself.

It's a tough one. If someone, not dx, has a very depressed mood for, let us say, three days I think he, or she, is completely justified in saying I'm depressed. Personally, I accept anyone's use of depressed, but it does bug me when someone uses the terms bipolar or schizophrenic. They are specific dx's. Still. people will say what they say and I hate when they assume that people with bipolar or schizophrenia are dangerous far more.

Oh no don't get me wrong! I've advised a few of my friends to see a doctor because they've been in a very low state of mind for sustained periods time, a couple of whom have indeed gone to see a doctor and one of whom is now in a weekly course of CBT. What I mean is that it's overused in the sense of people I know that are a bit sad and have only been so for an hour or so and say they're depressed.

I'm not doubting those that say they're depressed when they've had a sustained low mood, in fact I'd advise them to seek help. I'm more referring to those that throw it around on a regular basis and ten minutes later are fine again.

Despite understanding that there may be many undiagnosed or not suffering from a depressive illness but still generally feeling very depressed, it irritates me when people use it on a regular basis as it detracts understanding from the mood disorder.

Hope I've explained myself a bit better there.
RB.

I read somewhere or heard it on the news, that people (especially in Southern California) are going to their dr. and ASKING for a diagnosis of Bipolar. They treat it like going to the bar and ASKING for the latest "in" drink. Bipolar Disorder seems to be the new "in" disease to have. Actually having the DX of BP, I cannot even begin to describe how this makes me feel. Sort of like I need to hurl.
