Any women that have PMDD? How do you deal with the symptoms? I'm currently on birth control and have found it the most helpful. There are no symptoms whatsoever, but I'm wondering if there are other ways to fight the awfulness of PMDD.

The reason I ask is because I have no children, but I've been told that being on birth control will make it difficult for me if and when I want to get pregnant.

If you have PMDD, how do you deal best with it?

I've never had good luck with birth control (makes me crazier, believe it or not) and I have tried a ton of different kinds...so I can't help there. I have heard others say mirena is good because you usually don't have your period on it. I tried seasonale for a while and liked it but it made me gain massive weight and also have thyroid issues.

I try to use really good self care strategies during that time of the month - minimal caffeine, tryptophan to sleep, I also up my calcium and magnesium supplements and get plenty of rest and try to exercise every day. Also just make sure my calendar is as free as possible of stressful events and ask my husband to help me if I am feeling overwhelmed.

Is a prescription needed for Mirena or can I get over the counter? Yes I definitely minimize the caffeine because 1 symptom is over-anxiety. I'll try the calcium and magnesium supplements. Thanks. I find it difficult to exercise during those days.

I've got the mirena, waiting for the hormones to settle (6-8 months after insertion) before I can expect to see any results for the PMDD. They warned me I could be worse at first before the hormones level out... well Im in a psyc ward so yep, I got worse first.

Im still hopeful (this week ) as I have many friends who have had it and said after the initial few months its brilliant. None of them had diagnosed PMDD though... Not much had helped me previously (I tried suppliments, exercise, good diet etc) and I was very depressive and experienced severe OCD 9 days out of every month (suicidal the night before) hence the decision to take this step.

I do love it as birth control. I cant be on the pill due to previous blood clots and the gyno said this was my best option. They dont usually recommend the mirena for people who havent had children. Insertion is painful (opening the cervix unnaturally) and there is a risk of complications. I dont intend to have children at this point so the risks didnt really worry me. The cramps get bad from time to time but I think my anxiety at that time of the month spur them on.

For the moment (and most of last year) we've upped the anti psychotic and antidepressant. I dont drink caffeine, I eat fresh and healthy, I exercise, I meditate, I use aroma therapy, I practice self nurture and self care, and a few other things. Some have helped slightly, but not to the point where it has been a measurable improvement.

I track my periods and moods, but they have been irregular so Im a bit scared of what to expect next cycle. I dont want to end up back in hospital, but it wasnt just the PMDD that landed me here this time so I might be ok.

Nothing worked for me, sadly. I had a hysterectomy in 2011. No PMDD since then. There is a back story along with the PMDD...but I won't
Bore you.

Being on the pill should not make it difficult for you to get pregnant in the future. If you stop the pill your fertility will come back quickly.

I am very hormone sensitive. When i went off the pill i went into a severe hypomanic episode, barely slept for a week, and made some really bad decisions. I haven't used anything hormonal since then because i'm afraid of what might happen. Mirena is supposed to be great though, so i am considering it. Right now i have a copper iud, so it's good for birth control but does nothing to help with pmdd.

I take pills because my doctor won't let me get Mirena and from what she said it could be painful to insert it especially if you haven't had a child yet. The pills work for me. I'm currently on a pill that has 26 active pills and 2 iron tablets so I don't get periods anymore, which definitely helps with PMDD.

What pill do you take? I'm currently without insurance and may have to stick to the birth control because it's inexpensive.
