If I'm feeling depressed or in a low state I love to listen to music. Specifically hip hop, rap, pop, and rock music. And when I listen I turn the music up super loud to drown out my thoughts like killing myself. And it seems to work, ill start to dance and dissociate and pretend I'm somewhere else and just go crazy insane. Sometimes I start to get mad and pretend like I'm fighting some one. Yeah its weird but I just have to move and be apart of the music.

it is easy to get caught up in music. I think it can definitely affect our moods. it can bring you down or up. as long as it is distracting you from harming yourself this is a good thing,. take care

Music cannot trigger a bipolar mood episode. But it can trigger other emotions inside you. If its working for you so you keep safe and is making you feel good, then that is fantastic and keep using it as a coping strategy. Music can put you in a good mood but I have never ever heard a case of it causing a manic episode.
If you are already in an episode, either up or down, music can intensify these emotions. But causing it? No. |

I think music doing certain things to your mood can signify an oncoming episode though...

You may have an upcoming episode, like mentioned above. It's a thought.

Music can intensify my moods for sure, but only if I'm already in an episode. I have a rainy days and sunny days playlist on my iphone. Sometimes if I'm really down I know there are certain songs I have to avoid because they will encourage me to hurt myself. But music is definitely therapeutic. Hell today I had less than jake (one of the more depressing albums) on blast because I'm so on edge. I feel better now :-)

I think music can help or hurt when a person is vulnerable to an episode. I think wildflowerchild has the right idea, to be mindful of what can trigger you and avoid it until the episode passes. If you find music helps, then listen to the right music. Music can definitely evoke a emotional response, good or bad.
