We have an Employee Assistance Program at work
With it, we get unlimited psych. therapy.
However, it has to be one that they (the EAP people)
recommend ( I don't like that idea)

My question.
Is it safe to use an EAP plan from work?
Or will it become common knowledge that I used
therapy services?

Any advice?

Legally they cannot share information with others at the company. It is on a need to know basis. This means you boss may know, but this depends on company policy. But if it is an informally run company, talk (read: gossip) always does get around.

I used my EAP when I first started going back to therapy (after I was verbally assaulted last June at work by a coworker). No one knows/knew. I made sure the therapist was away from work and home.

I went to the EFAP therapist once years ago, and it was kept confidential. This was when i got my diagnosis. I came in hypomanic/mixed, agitated and tearful. Within a few minutes she stopped the session and sent me to a walk in clinic with a note requesting medication and a referral to a pdoc she knew. I got diagnosed, but i didn't want a mood stabilizer, so i did not go back to see either of them. It was a few years before i sought help again. I think she was good, but i was not ready.

That is how I found my first therapist. Well, she came recommended to me by another coworker/friend and she happened to be covered, though I only had 3 sessions covered by my work program. I worked in a very gossipy place and no one ever asked me about it or talked about it behind my back. Only a few people knew, and that was because we were all seeing her for various reasons, but we never discussed our sessions. Just how much we liked her. They didn't tell my supervisor, because she was surprised when I told her, because of scheduling conflicts.

Also, I did have a choice of therapist with that program.

Has anyone done private and also the EAP one?

Was there a difference, other than the difference in the person themselves?
(Awkward wording - but I think you know what I mean)

I'm not sure if I know what you mean. My eap therapist became my "private" therapist after my eap sessions were up. Theres no real difference from what I understand. Its just who pays.

Hey Tig, what I meant was (and again awkward wording) quality of care. It sounds like EAP is super good quality of care, if you liked her/him so much that you stayed with him/her.

I had a major issue with our EAP once. It includes legal consultations.
I had a consultation, and what I was told was wrong. It was not the
law in Alberta, it was the law in a different province, so it is sort of a once burnt twice shy

My wife is a pychotherapist and she will not see EPA referrals because the EPA usually has a much different (that's an understatement) agenda than the therapist and patient.

Hedwig - You've given me great advice.

Is there any way you can tell me more?

Of course it varies. But they often work with HR to mitigate losses around disability claims.
