As I have had a severe manic episode, just one, i was diagnosed with bipolar.

Then it was changed to BPD. But now my psychiatrist has a good few years of my mood swings and symptoms to go on, she thinks I either have cyclothemia or bp2.

I definitely identify with cyclothemia more than full blown bipolar. Sever mania doesn't happen at all to me, when it did happen was 7 years ago and that could have been the result of the medication I was on and the BPD.

However I do find that i experience a mixed state often which doesn't fit with cyclothemia.

I feel bipolar and BPD and maybe other diagnoses are just one massive spectrum send few people ever fit perfectly into one diagnosis.

That's why psychology tends to treat the individual symptoms nowadays rather than the overall diagnosis.

Have you been diagnosed then?

I have had severe depression and manic states so I know its more severe what I have than cyclothemia. The professionals don't always know what they are talking about. You don't have to believe follow agree accept everything they tell you. Trust yourself. I became aware by myself without professionals of my illness while spending one year abroad away from parents and it affected me through my studies and in my social life. I also have anxiety.

You're right Creative, but when you're not feeling well you put all your hopes up on specialist.
I had swings and thought I had anxiety, but then there were days when I was crying my eyes out. So after trying SSRI which made my state of mind worse, my pdoc (she is an expert for BP spectrum) said I have cyclothimia. it only effects 1% of population (lucky me ?!)...and it's a mild BP yeah.

I am just hoping for some imrpovement. I mean there is an imrpovement but I need more cus this is just not it yet. Maybe a change of meds...who knows. Luckily I have pdoc appointment in 8 days.

Professionals aren't always correct in what they say and not always trustworthy. I have had bad experience. I already know I have Bipolar, I have had severe depressive episodes and high anxiety and mixed states and mania. I've learnt about my illness over the years. Although last psychiatrist I saw said I have Cyclothemia, I know that is wrong in my case.

I've been diagnosed about 3 months ago. I haven't been give a name except bipolar 3. I've been told that the highs and lows can happen as often in one day.

I feel quite sure I had cyclothymia when I was younger. It has progressed into full-on bipolar.

Well that wasn't the case for me. I have been suffering with severe illness for numerous years which I found out myself without professional diagnosis, through experience. The professionals don't see what u go through. Well I did go to A&E when was in crisis, feeling suicidal but still wasn't treated as severe case in spite of numerous assessments I had after with mental health staff. I mean they said I just had mild to moderate depression and didn't believe I was Bipolar. But, It is not Cyclothemia what I have as the last psychiatrist said because I've had severe depression, anxiety, mixed states and mania.

I have strong awareness of my illness which has affected different aspects of my life for years. It's good that I was able to gain good insight into illness I have, but its challenging coping with it on my own and when people say negative unhelpful things it doesn't help me feel better. But I don't wanna give up. I'm quite strong and brave and open minded. If it was mild bipolar then I wouldn't be suffering a lot with it, I'd be able to live my life more in control, independently, freely. I feel its physical effects too.
