Zyprexa was a good PRN for me, at least before I went on it full-time. I occasionally use Ativan (a benzo) when I'm anxious or can't sleep despite all the hardcore stuff I take at bedtime, but I have to ask my husband for it because it's locked up. (I OD'd on it a little over a year ago and can't trust myself with it.) Other people take the anti-psychotics Risperdal and Seroquel as PRNs. Everybody is different, so what works for someone else might not do it for you. It just takes experimentation.

I took Zyprexa as a PRN when my moods started to stabilize. It lasted for a period of six weeks, then my p-doc decided to take me off of it. Fortunately, I no longer need it. Prior to that, I was taking Zyprexa 1x per day.

A prn should be a part of every treatment plan for a Bipolar patient... A "go to med" that can knock you down a bit if your going up or losing the ability to just plain handle things , of course these things usually happen on a friday nite or on the week your Pdoc is on vacation.
![]() If your on meds you have your normal everyday treatment plan, But if you start head first into a hellish episode , you can start the prn right then , in hopes to stomp out the problem before it becomes a raging hell. Zyprexa is a good one , benzios can work, Actually ole school Haldol is one that is a very quick acting medication. "My" understanding is that most Pdocs are open to the idea of having this in place, But it's something you should ask for if they do not bring it up. Just something to think about ![]()

My current best working prn is zyprexa wafers, they start to calm me within 20 minutes and I feel the full effect on my mood within hours.
I also have clonazepam and 2.5mg Ativans to use as needed. I havent needed any prn for weeks. |

My two Bipolar related PRN's are Clonazepam (Klonpin) 2mg and Olanzapine (Zyprexa) 5mg. I take the Clonazepam for anxiety and Olanzapine to deal with irritability, agitation and other mania/hypomania related things. I have found that during a hypo/manic episode I can take a ton of Clonazepam and it will not help me sleep. Only the Olanzapine works in that situation.
