If they won't take you unless you say you're suicidal or homicidal. I had to say I was suicidal in order to be hospitalized the last time.

Being Baker acted in Florida means you "need" to be IP for your safety or others but you are refusing. Now the IP Pdoc will decide how long she needs to stay. Yes she can request a mental health hearing , but that takes about 3 days and a judge can rule based on her Pdocs decision of when she can be released safely.

That is why its always best to sign yourself in...

But then what was the point going to the hospital to be admitted if you then refuse to be admitted voluntarily? Sorry genuinely confused

Many people initially go to the ER because they are feeling unsafe and want/need help. They are seen by a pdoc or a mental illness crisis person and it is decided that "Yes" this person needs to go IP for their own safety or the safety of others.

The person seeking help is told and may decide that "No" they don't want or need to anymore, Profess how they are just fine and want to just go home, tries to escape the ER, becomes violent trying to harm self or hospital staff , that kinda stuff would result in being "Baker Acted"

Really?

So.... what that means is that MM went to the ER as planned... and then refused to go to the IP facility like she had planned?

Hard to say. Earlier in this thread she said she was going to ask her T to Baker Act her, so I'm not at all sure what the chain of events were. Can you ask to be Baker Acted?

Hi I see a couple more scenarios. She went to the hospital she wanted to go to but they were full or didn't accept her insurance coverage and she changed her mind...or her family called.

Yes you can ask you Pdoc or T to baker act you, she said she didn't believe they would take her so maybe she asked because she didn't want to be refused.

Having the pdoc commit her may be the only way she can get in. I do not know.

It is here. You have to say you're a danger to yourself or others and then they'll admit you but it isn't voluntary.

I don't know exactly what happened, I just know what can occur that can be one of a few dozens reasons for a Baker Act. Maybe she will tell us or maybe she cant remember or just doesn't want to share that. Regardless I have known her here for a few years, She has been in desperate need of intense treatment and a place where she is just plain safe from anything and herself.

Hey L ! I hope when you read this you will be feeling so much better

I'm out. The only way you can go IP is to be involuntary plus they probably wanted to make sure I stayed. Its a lot like college dorms. Get up, have breakfast, go to class (or not), have lunch, go to class, free time, dinner, free time/visitors, class, free time, bed. Sometime that day see pdoc. There were around 18 of us. I was on the psychotic / dual DX floor. I don't think I'd be out today if I didn't have an appointment with my T but turns out he canceled on me. If I knew that I would have stayed a few more days. My husband couldn't bring his phone in and my son wasn't allowed in.

I'm now on effexor, abilify, lamictal, corlestral pill, and iron.
